Eight miles are passed over in short order, and the coach stops to chance the mail at St. Jo, the trading point for a rich and thickly set tled township. It is a smooth prairie, on the west bank of Sauk Rivor. A little back, the country is open and bluffy, while to the east ia continuous, heavy timber. When we were at Sauk Centre last, in 1861, there- were but one or two houses. Three years ago there was one dwelling house, a saw-mill, and one small store.— Now theTe are more than fifty families liv ing on an area of forty acres. The houses are, for the most part, comfortable, two story frame buildings, some painted ^and some unpainted. The greater portion of these, improvements was made during last season and this. Mr. Alex.
