The Liquor Ordinance. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 4 January 1855

The Liquor Ordinance. It docs not appear that the Liquor Ordinance ha.- ( done much good so far. It went into effect on the ( Ist of December, over one month ago, aud still the j Indians get their liquor the same as ever. Negro j Alley is the principal resort of these Indians espe- ( cially on the Sabbath, when the little money they hare been able to get the rest of the Week, is spent ( for liquor. , Look out foii tiiem.—The Times and Transcript 1 pays some of the convicts who lately escaped from 1 the State Prison were reported to be on their way to Los Angeles county, and it would be well for f our civil officers and citizens generally to keep a ' look out for them. We have been afflicted almost beyond endurance from the inroads of such miser- , able scamps from the North, where they have , evaded the punishment they justly merited, by j fleeing to this county. We think unusual caution ] should be observed at this time, and every one be i on their guard. < Tue Horticult...

Hlgliiy Interesting News from tlic Gila. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 4 January 1855

Highly Interesting News from the Gila. Our old friend and fellow citizen, Captain R. Sackett, arrived in town night before last, after three months absence on a prospecting tour on the Gila. He brings with him some most beautiful specimens of copper ore, upon which appear in no small quantities pure virgin gold and a great deal of gold fused with copper. The main body of the specimens before us are composed of the red oxide of copper, which, upon assay, give seventy-five per cent. pure copper, and for every one hundred pounds of ore one ounce and a half of pure gold.— There is also a small ingredient of silver, the exact proportion of which has not been ascertained. ¶ Capt. S. informs us that he procured these specimens at a point about forty miles distant from the Gila River, and about eighty miles from Fort Yuma, on the Colorado. ¶ He left there a week ago last Tuesday, coming in by the way of Vallecita, Agua Caliente and Temecula. Previous to his departure they had encountered no...

ARRIVAL OP THE AMERICA. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 4 January 1855

ARRIVAL OP THE AMERICA. The steamer America, Capt. Haley, arrived at San Pedro on Tuesday morning. The America passed the Mail steamer from Panama fifteen miles outside the Heads, consequently we have no later dates from the Atlantic States. We glean from our Northern exchanges the following summary of news .• Passengers ore now being carried from Sacramento to Placerville for fifty cents. 7JS9- The Sierra Citizen says that a specimen of quartz filled with gold was taken out by the Blue Shaft Tunnel Company, a few days since, weighing 112 ounces. The sum of $45,670 72 was collected in Nevada county for licenses from January Ist to December 15th, 1854. There are at present 125 patients confined iu the State Insane Asylum at Stockton, twenty of whom are females. Mr. Luce exhibited to the editors of the State Journal a specimen of superior marble, taken from a quarry recently discovered near the head waters of the Cosumnes, 13 miles from Fiddletown. It is said to be susceptible to a hi...

Three Men attacked by Robbers. Placerville, December 23d. ¶ The Mountain Democrat, extra, says: We received the following startling intelligence last night after our paper had been worked off. Eapann.
