11 iTHEBWAIiD. —The monopoly, the j demagogues, the "rings," are all preparing to flood Sacramento with agents and emissaries during the first week Of the session ofthe Legislature. Tbey will all combine, for all have v common Interest in robbing the people. In this state of the case would it not be well for the fanners and mechanics to take a personal interest in the organization of tbe Legislature and the election of a Senator'/ There are many granges and industrial guilds in i ; the Slate. They arc full of intelligence. Why not have them represented here, and taking as active an interest in political matters as the predatory aud thieving classes are preparing for 7 It is ttU excelled way to strengthen the bucks of the weak brethren, to have their most influential constituents visit dun at the capital In times of extraordinary interest, that they may freely and directly confer with each other On the ways and means to defeat the common enemy. —[Sacramento I nlou. UNITED STATES SENATOR. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 23 November 1873

UNITED STATES SENATOR. Editor Herald:—Now that the question of a United States Senator is before tiie people, and seeing that one of the San Francisco papers has prominently set forth the name of Gov. J. G. Downey as a thoroughly eminent and lit man to represent our great State in that body, permit me to invite the attention of the State at large to the fitness and propriety of this excellent name for that honorable position. Governor Downey is a representative man. A man Mho is thoroughly identified with every conceivable interest of the entire State. A man whom our people feel, seizes hold, and comprehends our resources, and who is not in connection, or entangled ln alliance with any of the great monopolies in this State, or the United States; a careful, shrewd thinker—both in matters of local concern, as well as the graver matters of State; a man who would bring to bear an untrammeled judgment and a devotion of mind in which the whole people of the State of California would feel ...

BEYOND JORDAN. And they came to Him, mothers of Judah, Dark-eyed, and In splendor of hair, Bearing down over shoulders of beauty, And bosoms half hidden, half bare; And they brought him their babes and besought Him, Half kneeling, with suppliantalr, To bless the bmwn cherubs they brought Him, With holy bunds laid In their hair. Then reaching His hands, He said, lowly, "Of such Is my kingdom;" and then Took the brown little babes In the holy White hands ofthe Savior of men; Held them close to His heart and caress M them, Put his face down to theirs as in prayer, Put their hands to His neck, nnd so bless'd them. WHAT MEN NEED WIVES FOR. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 23 November 1873

WHAT MEN NEED WIVES FOR. What does a man need a wife for? It is not merely to sweep the house, make the beds,* and darn the socks, and cook the meals chiefly that a man wants a wife. If this is all, when a young man calls to see a lady, send him into the pantry to taste the bread and cake she has made; send him to inspect the needle-work and bed-making; or put a broom into her hands and send him to witness its use. Such things are important, and the wise young men will quietly look after them. Rut what the true man next wants of a wife is her companionship, sympathy and love. The way of life lias a good many dreary places in it, and man needs a companion to go with hi in. A man is sometime overtaken with misfortune; he meets with failure and defeat; trials and temptations beset him; and he needs one to stand by and sympathize. He has some stern battles to fight with poverty, with enemies, and with sin, and he needs a woman, that, when he puts his arm around her and feels that he has...
