MONDAY MORNING, MARCH 18, 1850 Wur.lfMt l»r«tl..>. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 18 March 1850

MONDAY MORNING, MARCH 18, 1850 Wur.lfMt l»r«tl..>. In an able work written some fifteen years ngo by Dr. Millerof Trinity College, Dublin, entitled " History Philosophically Illustrated," there occurs a remarkftblo passage, which subsequent events hare marked as a prediction now in course of fulfilment, in the settlement of California and tho growth of San Francisco. Yet. at the time the bonk was written there wan nothing in the condition of things then minting to lead any mm to such a conclusion, except such wise men as were accustomed to reason upon those abstract principles which givo a direction to human nffairs. It occurs in tho introduction to tho genoral subject of his work, in which ho defines with great clearness, the various causes which contribute to tho social progress and commercial importance- of nations. The great object of his work is to prove Housscnt's sublime, declaration that " God reigns in History' — that nil the events in human affairs are so regula...

Snbtmtli Hay In Man Front Uco. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 18 March 1850

Snbtmtli Hay In Man Front Uco. A day of. surpassing lovelines* was yester, a Sabbatn day. Perhaps the soventh-day serenity, peace and holiness of the Creation still lingers about our clime, and maintains in the elements shaped at His will, the glorification of an nil-wise Creator. Sunday in San Francisco, is uniformly a day of heavenly beauty. So, yesterday, the storm cloud had passed, the changing winds had sunk to rest, and the morning looked forth as benignantly bright, calm and pure as the spirit that blessed and hallowed it as a day of rest to all mankind. But man—selfish, presumptuous, impious man was not soothed by the influence of so fair a scene to a veneration of these works of divine love. Blooming spring looked abroad from hill-side verdure, and the fiesh fields of blossoms sent up an incense to heaven grateful to the Cod of Sabbath, and rejoicing that Nature wore the vestments of another opening season. c awakening beauties of early spring, however, were too wholly lost...
