Pag* 16 SACHSE SENTINEL JUNE 1986 Father's Day: Then And Now Though fathers have been around for a long time, the first official Father's Day in the United States wasn't celebrated until June 19, 1910. Today, pipes and slip- pers still rank high as tradi- tional gifts. But fathers also can expect a much wider range of gifts'limited only by the imagination. t Fathers who like to keep in touch are touched by Father's Day gifts such as mobile cellular telephones. One of the unique —and most useful—gifts for fathers on the move are the new cel- lular mobile telephones, which help dad stay in touch with the home and office while he's on the road. The mobile telephone from Oki, for example, features the latest advances in cellular telephone technology, includ- ing easy line access, push-but- ton dialing, last-number re- call and 100-memory dialing. JUNE 1085 SACHSE SENTINEL Page 1g J < D z < z PLANNING by Bill Wood, CPA 272-8567 YEAR-ROUND PLANNING If you want favorable lax treatment on a transaction, you can't wait until tax filing time to do your planning. Before transactions involving substan- tial dollars are completed, see that your tax advisor has estimated the tax conse- quences. Here are a few things you might keep in mind in reference to your security transactions: • Capital gains and losses from all investments are combined. This means that a loss on the sale of stocks can off- set the gain on other investments such as real estate, etc. • If you have acquired blocks of stock at different times and at different prices, be sure to identify which block of stock is being sold since it could determine whether you are entitled to short-term or long-term tax treatment. • Consider investing in companies that retain the profits to finance growth. Hopefully, this will convcrt or- dinary income (dividends) into long- term...
