"RIOTOUS" BEHAVIOR. A fistic encounter on the 22nd lilt., just off the footpath id Ihe rear of TattersrJl's hotel, led to the prosecution of the parlies, Thomas Ran yard and^Vter McCulloch, on the charge of behaving in a l-iotous manner in a public placc. . Mr Beard appeared lor McCul loch, who pleaded guilty and was fined 10/, with 6/ court costs. Ranyard pleaded not guilty, and entered-the box to give evidence. Hi pleaded provocation—that Mc-. Culloch came up in the hotel and hit him while he had his hands full of photographic paraphernalia. Later on the parties came to blows on the footpath, and Constable Madderu appeared on the scene. Jt.mes Powell was called us a witness, but his evidence proved a little more than ,Ranyanl asserted —that be hit, or railier pushed, McCtilloch only once and the latter fell over. Powell said there were many blows struck—he didn't count th m all. Fined 5/, with 6/ court costs.

NEIGHBORS AT VARIANCE. Emily Grey charged lid ward jolley with using obscene language in a public place, and also with as-suiting her son, aged 11 years.. Sir Johnson appeared for com plainant, and Mr Beard for defend ant. After hearing evidence bull) charges were dismissed. Complainant's calves trespassing on defendant's property ied up to the charges. The boy Grey was playing marbles in the lnne, nnd Jolley told him' to- get. tlu. -calves out of; the paddock.-- Mrs Grey swore■ thn't Jolley swore at the boy, but this delcndant denied, and in turn staled that both MrsGr.sy and her son, swore at hint. Jolly de cided to impound the calves, and smtsil oji oath that iho boy tried 10 ptevent hiru doing so by throwing sticks and sioues, and endeavoring to "cut the calve* out." He was arutoyed, and rode at the boy on-; his pony, but denied striking him with the whip, which the boy swore he did, making him cry. Heavy Stock Traffic at Tocumwal. The Tocutnwal railway staff ex peiienced n busy month in' October in handling iii'e stock. The month's returns aie as follows:— Outwardly consigned to Victoria— .320 calves, 3y55 cattle. 103 horses, 53 pij;-*,. 70,180 sheep. Close on 50,000 sheep were consigned to tbe Newmarket saleyards, and the balance to pasture country in var ious parts ol, tbe State. The re venue from this source alone eat '■ ceede^ /5C00. A considerable number of sheep ami cattle was al so despatched on the N S.W. line.

WATER FINDERS. The Queensland Land Department employs two officers, officially desig nated "water-finder*." One works with the automatic finder and the other with the old-faRbioned twig, one checking the other. A remark able demand for their services has Bet in. In fact, it ia impossible to meet all the requests in a given time. A report war, recently submitted to the Lands Department on the result of their operations in the Sbiro of Murgon, where they conjointly select ed a number of sites for wells. Seven cases were quoted. In ono, water to the amount, of 600 gallons. per hour was struck, the pump being unable to rcduce the tlo'.w In an other, 350 gallons, and in i\ - third 150 gallons, were obtained ; while in two' other cases good mipplicB were ob tained without any cstimntn of-the quantity given. One farmer went 20 feet and obtained a- small supply. Another struck salt water. The far mers had'to sink from 75 feot to 280 feet to get the better supplies.
