Local and General. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 24 October 1917

Local and General. Yellumjip races and sports take place to-day, and those anxious to attend from this end may do so by arranging with car owners. It should be a pleasant and profitable outing. Ratepayers concerned will be pleased that, thanks to the representa tions of Cr. Pickering, the rate for channel areas for this year in this district will be ninepence in the £. This is a considerable reduction on previous charges, and will be   appreciated. The big fighting on the front means casualties, and among those who went under recently is Pte. Albert (Bert) Anderson, who was one of the first to come to this district. May his relatives all feel proud in their affiction ! In connection with the scheme to supply electric light and power for Ouyen, arrangements have been made for an expert to visit the town either this or next week. It is impossible to fix an estimate of cost without an inspection, and it is quite possible the report will be before the council at next meetin...

Stock Report. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 24 October 1917

Stock Report. A. E. Lord and Co., auctioneer, &c., acting. as agents for Messrs. Coles and Pullum, report having sent a truck of pigs to the above agents on 1st October. Some of the pigs were of excellent quality, whilst others were in need of a little more time to top up. We would advise farmers to make their pigs good up to the weight of 130 to 140l1b., those weights bringing the highest prices, for baconers at an early age must pay the breeder better than keeping them on to make them heavy weights. We quote:--On account of Mr. N. P. Marwich, of Walpeup: Two heavy-weight choppers at £8 7/6, topping the market; 3 choppers at £6 1/6; - heavy baconers at £5 5/6; light porkers, 11 weeks old, at £2 12/. On accounrt of Mr. H. Towk: 4 heavy baconers at £5 6/0, topping the market for this class of pig. On account uo Mr. N. Whitford, Ouyen : 1 porker at £3 :2/. On account of Mr. C. Finch, Ouyen : 8 stores at £2 5/. Yellumjip Races. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail — 31 October 1917

Yellunmjip Races. The weather last week was not encouraging for those who intended witnessing the racing at Yellumjip. The v?ious officiral~s worked well, and dererved the success obtained, more I particularly does this apply to the secretary and_ his assistant, who found nothing too much irouble. Local and General. The ordinary meeting of the Walpeup shire takes place at Mur rayville tomorrow. The most im portant business will be dealing with applications for the position of secretary, but it is improbable that a final choice will be made at this meeting. Today's race meeting at Cowan- gie is the last the district will see up to July next at the earliest, and not then unless the war is over. In their wisdom (or want of it) the military authorities have decreed that no horse or pony races may be included at sports meeting which can only be held on permission from the State Commandant. This means that the principal attraction at all district gatherings disappears; but the V.R.C. and other big .clubs keep going just about the same. "If people will go and live so far away from the big centres, they must expect to put up with incon veniences." N.ext Wednesday shotld see.a big crowd board the special train for Murrayville. .The trip is an inter esting one, and our western friends ...
