"Truly Mixed." (TO THE EDITOR.) [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 18 March 1901

'fruly Mixed.' (to the editor.) Sir, — Will you' kindly allow me space in your valuable paper to reply to the observations by the gentleman who by his own acknowledgment is ' Truly Mixed.' My experience goes to prove that it is really a bad thing to mix them, that is, of course, when 'you are drowning your sorrows in the flowing bowl,' and it is not a good thing to write letters to the papers after you have been indulging, as one is likely to get very much mixed in their thoughts. Such is the lament able position of my protectionist friend. I have no difliculty in believ ing that he is 'Truly Mixed' when lie attempts to make out that an alder man who is in favor of minimum wage could not be a freetrader. Truly my friend does need enlightenment. That is one of the strongest points of free traders. Is it not already established in New South Wales. Sly ' mixed' friend should read the ' Age' when he would see the price of labor in Vic toria, a glorious tribute to the great cause of prot...

Federal Electorate or Riverina. MR J. M. CHANTER AT HAY. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 18 March 1901

Federal Electorate of Riverina. MR J. If. CHASTER AT H4V Mr J. M. Chanter, the Bartonian candidate addressed a very large and enthusiastic gathering of electors at Hay on Thursday night. He delivered a splendid|speech, and was repeatedly cheered. Interjections were a trifle numerous, but withal good-humoured, and the speaker answered them satis factorily. Mr G. A. Miller, in the absence of the Mayor, was voted to the chair. Mr Miller said that Mr Witcombe had been appointed Returning Officer, and he had thought it as well not to pre side at the meetings of the candidates. He asked them to give Mr Chanter a good hearing, though he hardly thought it necessary to ask, as they had heard Mr Chanter before with great attention. Mr Chanter (who was received with great cheering) said that he need not appeal for a good hearing, that had been accorded him right throughout the electorate. On the last occasion he had spoken here, they had listened to him very attentively. It was not bis intenti...

In replying to the toast of the Common wealth, be said referring to the trans ferred services, that everything was working smoothly. The Federal Government had even nronouilded a policy, and hedid not think thatanybody I was a penny the worse for it, and it was not causing any hostility against the Government. The fact was that Australia was beginningtoreaHsc that the federal policy was intended for the nation, and why the sulphhurous threats which were uttered in certain quarters fell so flat. People were now beginning to see that federation had no terrors, and he hoped all would assist the Government in carrying out the important work they had in hand. He subsequently addressed a meeting of about 500 people in the Mechanics hall, and had a good reception He said he understood he was to have .opposition in the electorate.
