LOCAL AND GENERAL Band for Geraldton. — Speaking at a civic function on Saturday last, the chairman of the Western Australian Fire Brigades Association ' (Mr. L. Gary) expressed the opinion that Ger aldton should have its own brass band. The Mayor (Dr. J. McAleer) explained j that they would be pleased to form a I local baud if only they could acquire i the requisite instruments. Witc -6r raf dfon {guardian TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 194S CZECH COMMUNIST COUP When on March 10th the chief dele gate of the old Czechoslov.ikian Goveru inent to U.N.O. .(Mr. Papauek) lodged with the Secretary-General a formal complaint that the recent Communist coup in his country had been 'pre- pared and executed with the help, encouragement and advice of Russia' and urged that circumstances of the change of government should be inves tigated by the Security Council, he did not even pretend to represent the usur per Government, which is the only existing Government of Czechoslovakia. The Secretary -General therefore was fully justified in treating the complaint as 'non-governmental correspondence,'' available to members of the Council but not officially placed before it. The threat of rain on Saturday did not materialise, and the fixture was favored with ideal weather. In all tweuiy-eight brigades participated and competition through out was exceptionally keen. For thfc first time a number of teams were Specially catered»for with 'B' Grade events, and from all reports the innova tion has proved so outstandingly suc cessful that this arrangement will be continued in the future. Men at Mackay, Cairns, Mary borough and Gympie are expected to vote for a return to work as soon as mass meetings are held. Meetings of dispute committees in country centres are scheduled for to-morrow. To-day the strike positiou is that 3,000 raH wayuien, mostly members of the Amal gamated Engineering Union and 2,000 waterside workers are on strike. Of the 15,000 rail workers who were stood down early in the dispute most have returned to work.

SCENE IN POLICE COURT Counsel Shouts and Walks Out ADJOURNMENT REQUEST Brisbane, March 30. The Communist barrister (Mr. Max Julius) shouted at the magistrate and walked out of the Police Court to-day after Magistrate Wilson had refused au adjournment in a case in which a traf fic charge was laid against Jack Gray son, a railway employee. An adjourn ment uutil April 12th was granted ou anti-picketing charges against fourteen men. Mi. Julius, who appeared for Graysoii, asked for au adjournment He said that the defence had not had ade quate opportunities to- prepare its case As his solicitor he had heard from Grayson only on Thursday last and the holidays had since intervened.
