BRUTHEN MECHANICS' CONCERT. An Unqualified Success. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 1 July 1914

| BRUTHEN MECHANICS' CONCERT. An Unqualified Success. A large audience greeted the performance of the Snowdrop Minstrels at the local hall last Thursday night, and as was anti cipated, a first class entertainment resulted. In fact, it was one of the best of its kind that has been seen in a Bruthen hall. The stage was nicely arranged and several marked improvements, such as a new drop curtain and ' new wings were noticed. The . performance was rather late in starting, but beyond that, not a single hitch occurred- during the ; whole of the arrangements^ The first part of the programme took the form of an evening-party. ; ' -■ DrF. S. Bond presided as host, and the two side men, "Bones" and "Tambo,'' found splendid impersonators in Messrs Tnlioch andV. Hardy. These latter kept the audience in roars of laugh'ter with their jokes and "turns." After an overture by Tambo and Bones (tamberine and bones) and Mrs Penrose (piano) the whole company treated the audience to an opening chorus, "Th...

FEDERAL ELECTIONS. Mr Wise at Bruthen. (Continued from last issue.) [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 1 July 1914

FEESERAL EL£GTiONS. ? Mr Wise at Braihen. (Continued from last issue.) As a cure for the curse of the |.party system Mr Wise advocated I Elective Ministries. Being elect I ed by the House, they would be responsible to it, and every meas ure would be dealt avith on its merits. > At the present time, when the House dealt with non party measures there was a won derful difference iri the way they were discussed to that of party measures. The Labor Party el ected its Ministers, but the Lib- j eral selection of such men was ! usually left to one or two individ uals. If Elective Ministries were I in force, the blame for the' act of I an idiotic Minister would not have to be .borne by his col-, leagues, and members would not i hesitate to pass a vote of censure I on a man who acted like Mr Kel- •' ly ever the Teesdtde-Smith con- j tract, for. instance. A CHINESE WEDDING. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 1 July 1914

A CHINESE WEDDING. In China children are betrothed by their parents at an early age. A child may be betrothed as soon as it is born, but the usual age is about ten or twelve. Several years, therefore, must elapse between the betrothal and the marriage. It sometimes liap-! pens that a fourteen-year-old boy is married to a twelve-year-old girl, but this is not the rule. The average age I of Chinese brides is sixteen, and that 1 of (he grooms seventeen years. When an engaged couple becomes old enough to be married their par ents first decide upon the month in which the marriage ceremony shall be held. This depends upon the caba-1 Ustic animals which governed the re- 1 speciive birthdays of bride and groom. If the groom were born under the sign of the rooster and the 'bride un der that of the hare their marriage i must take place in the seventh moon, i If the tiger and the ape, respectively, presided at their births they must be married in the second or eighth moon.
