Fire at Stanley. CAPTAIN JONES' STORE DESTROYED. STANLEY, MARCH 24. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 25 March 1891

Fire at Stanley. CAPTAIN JONES' STORE DESTROYED. [BY ELECTIHC TELEGRAPH]. STANLEY, MARCH 24. A fire broke out in the premises occupied by Mr, W. Jones as a general store at about 1-30 a.m. to-day, and notwithstanding the strenuous efforts made by several of the townspeople the shop and stock and part of dwelling house attached, and occupied by Mr. A. H. Smith was completely destroyed. The heat from the burning building was intense, the paint on some weather board cottages on the opposite side of the street was blistered. As there was no wind at the time the flames were easily confined to the promises in which the outbreak occurred. With plenty of assistance and an abundance of water Mr. Smith was enabled to save the kitchen and two other rooms of his home, wherein to make shift until he can procure further accommodation. Happily- the fur- niture was rescued from the flames. The stock in the shop which was valued at about £1000, was partly insured, but the building was uninsured. The...

Stanley Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 25 March 1891

Stanley Notes. (FRON OUR CORRESPONDENT.)   The mayor of Warrnambool has, by cable, preferred the claim of that town as the most desirable site for the federal seat of Government. Not if we know it, Mr. Mayor, thanks all the same for the hint. The fame of Warrnambool rests on potatoes, and her claim is doubtless founded on that distinction, but we can produce a better article. See the quotations in the Sydney market, and therefore must take precedence. Now that we know what we are fit for we intend to work out our destiny. Here we are, the nearest Tasmanian port to the Australian mainland ; a peninsular stretch out into the straits, like the right hand of fellowship held out to the neighbouring colonies, while every wave that beats upon the opposite shores calls out ' Federate.' Even the old Nut took the initiative some time ago, and by a gigantic landslip, made a move towards Victoria. The destinies of a great nation will yet be moulded in the Stanley Hall, which ere lo...

Boat Harbour Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 25 March 1891

Boat Harbour Notes. ? ? (l'BOJI OUB OWN 0OI1BESPONDENT.) ? Transposing some well known words, I would any, ' Behold how great a fire a little matter kindleth.' For several days Boat Hnrbour has been shining, but in a manner fnr from noceptnblo to innuy of the residents. An extensive nnd dangerous lire originated in a simple but injudicious manner on the evening of Friday last. Home boys, I am told, in endeavouring to secure some honey lodged in an old stump in ono of Mr. Bcrchrcc's paddocks, made a fire and before departing extimruished it. as thev thought. But after results demonstrated the folly of a cnrclcss use of firo in this very dry season. A south westerly wind fanned some smouldering coal nnd in a remarkably short time the sur rounding ferns were In n blnzo. The freshening wind caught up the fire, and from tree to tree tliis irresistible enemy paused, prostrating mnny of the gaunt giants whose huge arms seemed stretched out to welcome their destroyer. Mr. U. Mnyne's beautif...
