FOREST GREEK DIGGINGS. 31st March, 1852. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 6 April 1852

TUESDAY MORNING, APRIL 6, 1855. FOREST CREEK DIGGINGS. (From our own Correspondent) - 31st March, 1852. Famine or no famine, this winter, at the diggings? That is the question; the solution   lies with His Excellency Charles   Joseph La Trobe. If the roads from Melbourne to Forest Creek, from Geelongto Ballarat, and the roads between all the diggings, say Bal larat to Forest Creek, Forest Creek to Bendigo and Friar's Creeks, to be put in passable condition, fit for travel during winter, there will be no scarcity of food; if all these roads, or any of them, become impassable, even for a short, time   consequences may be fatal . All will admit the importance of the two first specified roads, but the almost   equal necessity of good roads between the various diggngs, may not be so ap parent; I will state my reasons for placing their claims so prominently forward Besides a host of storekeepers in a small way, who get supplies front tow...

To the Editor of the Geelonj Adoertiaer and Intelligencer. Stm,-Although the multiplicity of business presses hard upon me at present. Yet I endea vour to devote a few occasional hours to readling and reflection, and upon one of those occa?sons, whilst reading the resolutions adopted at the late Anti-transportation 3Meeting, held at Melbourne. I was exex.edlngly pleased to find that we have in Victoria men ua staunch, and as true to adopt, and I trust to carry out measures for the well being of their adodted land, as those of our tther land. Yes, sir, the resolotien framed and ecr ried by that meeting ore moral and loyal, and not too strong; but mucbh less intolerale than the stigma and insult is to be borne by us, which Earl Grey has east npm us at his lato interview with car delegate, (Mr. King.) I was indeed humble I at the contrast made by that gre~t one of the rearth between free enmigrants, and har doned c imrinals sent out to this colony; crimi nals who ,tfrr passing a osries...

THE PLEASURES AND ANNOYANCES OF OFFICE. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 7 April 1852

Tns PLEAScnsS A1N A:r;orAxcES or OF ncz.-Lord Brougham remarks, in his Biogra phies of Statesmen, that there must be something peculiarly attractive in the possession of official power, when eminent men, havinz every other means of enjoyment in private, shrink from re tirement as much as most do from the grave. We do not know how the new Mavor of Gelong rplishes the toils ofofllice: but lthi new [Maor of Melbonrne appears to feel that the trouble and annoyance hardly conimensate him for the honour, for he has authorised the Melbourne Herald, doubtless in the vain expectation of mi;ianting the troubles of officp, to publish the followving catalogueof the routine duties of a Mavor during a single day: No. 1-Half-pist nine n.m., at the Police Office.
