THE LATE FIRE IN FORTITUDE VALLEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Brisbane Courier — 29 June 1864

THE LATE FIRE IN FORTITUDE VALLEY.   In accordance with the provisions of the Inquests on Fires Act, Mr. J. J. Wilson, the City Coronor, held an enquiry, on Monday last, into the causes which led to a fire which broke out on the premises of Charles O'Brien, of Brunswick-street, Fortitude Valley, on Monday morning last. The following are the principal features in the evidence which was given:   Charles O'Brien deposed that sometime about one o'clock that morning he was startled by a noise, and heard his daughter calling out that the place was on fire. He did not at the time live on the premises where the fire was, but next door, in a new hotel which he had built, and into which he moved last Saturday night. On hearing the alarm he jumped out of bed, ran down stairs, and went to the bakehouse, where the fire was extending over the roof. The prin- cipal blaze was outside, but inside he saw a small portion of fire in the shingles by the side of the flue. He cal...

The Courier. PUBLISHED DAILY. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29,1864 [Newspaper Article] — The Brisbane Courier — 29 June 1864

The Courier. PUBLISHED DAILY. WEDNESDAY; JUNE 29, 1864. EARLY in May the Colonial Treasurer brought forward in the Assembly a resolu- tion affirming the expediency of establish- ing "a sense of light dues to be paid in " respect of vessels trading in or to the "colony of Queensland ;" and the same was passed in committee of the whole mid adopted by the house. No bill had, however, been introduced, up to the ad- journament, to give effect to the resolution ;   because, we suppose, the Government had not then agreed upon the scale of dues to   be charged. After their conduct in the matter of the illegal levying of the gold export duty, we trust that the shipping   and commercial interest is sufficiently sensible of their forbearance in this matter. The Government do really intend to wait   for the sanction of an Act of Parliament before collecting light dues, instead of   doing this in virtue of the old act, 3 WIL- LIAM ...
