About Hens. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 26 February 1904

About Hens. A boy who was required to write an essay on hens is said to have produced the following: ' Hens is curious animals ; the}' don't have no nose nor no teeth nor no ears. Thev \ swallow their whittles whole and chew it up in their crops insid eof 'em. The outside of hens is generally put into pillers and into feather dusters. The inside of a hen is some- i times filled with marbles and ; shirt buttons and sich. A hen is. very much smaller than a good many other animals, but thej^ll dig up more tomato plants than anything that ain't a hen. Hens4s very useful to lay eggs for plum puddings. Hens have got wings, and can fly when they get frightened. I cut off a hen's head with an hatches:, and it frightened her to death.'

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 29 February 1904

Tot THE bDITOR. Sir, — In reading the report of the North Coasti Central Association in your last idsue, I notice that the secretary w;jis instructed to thank Mr. Denham for finding a market for the surplus gooseberry crop. A few weeks a-go, when Mr. Denham visited the idistriet. vou renorterl him as having sAid at Dulong that nothing would lie done this year by his department relative to this crop being pulpejl. Xow, sir, as an old fruitgrower,; I could not read the report of the X.C.C. Association without conjiiug to the conclusion that it was not composed of prac tical fruitgrbwers, for this reason: The crop of Cape gooseberries is by ' no means Confined to the North Coast, and (Minister Denham (ac cording to njiy reading) only treated five tons o|f local berries. Tons upon tons of this fruit have gone to waste year after year when the jam factories declared that they had enough till iiext season. The cash value of berries treated for jam during the (past couple of .seasons has b...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 29 February 1904

To i the Editor. Sir, — A curious anomaly in the timber traffic on our railways is the fact that log timber is carried cheaper than sawn stuff. Is it not curious that! the recent deputation to the Minister never pressed this matter. Itj places the country miller and hiis timber-getters at the mercy of the city man and timber trust. Whyj should the department give consideration to log timber being sent jfrom Gympie? Com-, uiou-sense says let the mills there cut it L-j-ok at the Hopetoun mills ; they have a 30-mile carriage per road, anji then they have to pay the higher rate, whilst teams haul ing pine cauj tip them into the river and pay no] carriage at all. The concession made on ''piped' logs is a valuable one to timbergetters. Some people are unkind enough to suggest that our member is nobbled by the timber trust and city millers, who want ib get their timber and firewood asi cheap as the country miller. — Yoijirs, &c, 1 Onlooker.

OUR STORY COLUMN. "The Jackeroo." [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 29 February 1904

GUE STORI COLTJlOf. ' The Jackcroo.' BY JAMES WILKINSON. The ball was in full swing, and bright- eyed maidens and gallant ! men were gliding over the polished I floor to the strains of a first-class I string band. It was a hospital ball j — that is, it was got up in aid of the funds of one ot those institutions which are such a feature in Aus tralian settlement, ot which Aus tralians are justly proud, and to whose support they contribute most generously. It was, therefore, not an exclusive affair; some were pres ent who thought themselves better than their neighbours. But, gener- ] ally speaking, caste and class were ; forgotten for the time, and the young ! squatter danced ijvith the selector's j daughter, the tjall, clean-limbed, ! athletic stockmaii waltzed with the bank-manager's wife, and the local doctor, a single man, seemed hapo\r in having for his! partner the pretty ! brown-haired school-teacher, Kittv Warren, the belle of the ball. ' ' Kitty had not been very long in i th...
