SERPENTINE. 23rd October, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 25 October 1878

SERPENTINE. EFRO3I OGR OWN COI E-OND:.ST.I 23rd October, 1878. On Tuesday evening the 22nd inst, we had a visit from the Venerable Arch deacon Stretch, who is visiting the diffe rent parishes in the dioceseof Melbourne toinanu.urate the the Bishop of Melbourne Fund. Although it is very clearly ex plained in the Ar'tas of the 21st Sep tember, 1878, yet it may not be out of place here to quote the Archdeacons words appertaining to that fund. The Bishop himself contributes £350 per annum towards it. The Bishop of Mel bourne's Fund is applied in angmenting the stipends of clergymen and readers.cf whom there are eighty in this part of the diocese i, e, from Sandhurst to the Goul bouite, Echuca, and Serpentine, being the hist northern point. If every church man would give what he could afford to wards the fund a good round sum would be realized. Too mary are afraid to make a beginning, not heeding that the Heavenly Father will strengthen the good beginning and give them power to continue ...

CORRESPONDENCE WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE TO THE EDITOR OF THE KERANG TIMES [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 25 October 1878

CORRESPONDENCE. WATER,'t ATEIr EVE1iRYWIERE To TRIa EDITOi tO T1HE Ke:,AvO TIMES Sta,-In your report of proceedings at the hist meeting of the Swan Hill Shire Council, I observe a brief refer ence to' letter addressed by myself to that corporation. So brief indeed is your par, that no person could from it's perusal suspect the great import. ance of the subject therein introduced to the notice of the council. Intro duced, I say, because the matter of the letter consisted only of a request that the council would permit me, viva voce, to submit to them the facts bear ing on the supply of water to a wide and important area of the shire. Very patiently I waited in the hall during the sitting of the 8th inst., but my let ter, owing to the presure of business, was not read before I was compelled to retire. I however requested Council lor Kirwan (my successor in the re presentationofthe East LoddonRiding) to take charge of the affair when, my letter should be read. Time and ap. portunity we...

The Kerang Times AND SWAN HILL GAZETTE. PUBLISHED WEEKLY. KERANG, OCTOBER 25, 1878. THE LANDS COMMISSION REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 25 October 1878

A:i SwaY HILL, GAZETTr. PL'IL nED WEEKLY. KEI:{ANG, OiC iOBER 25, 87S. THE LAND) CO.I:IISSION` REPt )R'T. THE progress repJrt of the Crown Lands Commission, whicih has just been laid bIelore Parliament, and on which Mr Longmore's new Amending Land Bill has evidently been based, is a document of such importance to selectors and settlers in new districts, as to require more than a word or two of passing comment at our hands. ,The Amending Land Bill, as readers of the T'mies are already aware from our previous remarks on the subject, has two leading features, namely, the reduction of the license fees or rental .from two -shillings per acre yearly to one shilling, and-the extension of the preliminary period of license from three to six years. -We should addi that in accordance with the views set forth in the report of the-Commission, the new measure of the Minister of Lands will provide that every selector who has during his six years of occu pancy complied with the conditions of his li...

TERRICK TERRICK. Oct. 22, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 25 October 1878

TERRICK TERRICK. .P:"1U OUt OSWS CRt55550SDflt5T1 Oct. 22, 878. Life in small country towns and in villages is generally compared to the flow of a small stream whose current glides easily onward, reflecting in minia ture the larger interests and events of a distant larger world, and rarely agitated by storms, or bearing on -its bosom anything more important than straws and rushes. But in the townships of this district it mi-ht be more aptly compared to the creeks that the travel ler thnds in it. In the rainy season, i e the harvest time) it is full from bank to bank, but in ordinary weather, containing nothing but stagnant little pools of water, and the stream ofevents ceased to flow. Tnis is an ordinarily true parallel of such townships as Ter rick and Mitiamo. But the latter place has been vivified by a passing thundes storm in the shape ofan agitating event which would require a pen of a Dickens to describe in all its ludicious entirety. Briefly stated it is this. The inhabi tants...
