A BILL, introduced for the parpóse of giving effect to the resolutions recently adopted by the Legislature, affirming the expediency of appointing an additions! Judge, has passed through both Houses of Parliament. The reasons urged in favour of the proposed appointment were two fold die desirability of creating a C«>urt of Appeal, and the urgent uccestiî'y that exists for the immediate estaliÜKhment of additional Circuit Courts in the colony. On the other hat»I, it was contended that the present revenue <>f the colony is insufficient to warrant the additional expenditure which w«n1d be «TItailed by die proposed appointment. A court of apiical, it was very justly remarked, would be of little service indeed, if composed of less than three judges; and, with regard to the increase of work which wnntd be caused by the establishment ol additi<mal circuit etmrts, it was thought by some hon members, that if our pre- sent jndge was uneqnal to the work, t good ^ ba...

j A SottKTV has jost been fanned in this ; town designated the " Rockhampton , Benefit investment and Building So- ciety." A large number of -shares have already been taken up, and it is antici- pated that the number will be greatly augmented before the first meeting, which ia to be held on Tuesday evening, the fifth day of August. The ultimate .success of ft -society of this kind, based on sound principies, and having good and efficient directors, can- not he doubted. Throughout Britain and the Colonies, Building Societies iiave been formed, and in almost every instance have shown a large dividend to the share- holders. In several towns in Queensland they have worked remarkably well, and there is every reason to suppose that the society now inaugurated will, likewise, prove a lucrative and safe investment. At the late meeting, much valuable information was elicited, and the clear manner in which the principles on which diese societies are based were set forth, must have convinced a...

ATTEMPTED OITRAGE ON TM IÏOK. A. ARRIVAL OF THE CITY OF BRISBANE (From the Maryborough Chronicle.) [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin and Central Queensland Advertiser — 19 July 1862

ARRIVAL OF THE CITY OF BRIS BANE.     (From the Maryborough Chronicle.) AFTER all the hopeful anticipations the   people of this district have indulged of   obtaining a shipload of immigrants di- rect from the mother country, and after the most satisfactory arrangements have   been made for their temporary accom- modation and immediate engagement, the vessel has gone to Moreton Bay and   landed all her passengers at Brisbane.     Instead of an accession of 400 souls to     our population, we have something less     than 40, which were brought up by the   "Queensland," and among them is not     one of the class whose settlement in the   district was looked forward to with so much satisfaction. Had ordinary care been exercised by the Government, it is clear this disap- pointment w...

A PARAGRAPH relative to . fruitless at tetn|>t which ban been made by Mr. rViMMTiLu, assisted by the Native Po I lice, to ascertain the fate of Mr. Ronara, j was accidentally omitted from Wednes I day's isane. It is inserted below. There i is little doubt that, after being inveigled ' j into the hush by the blacks, the unfortu ! nate man waa murdered. This im- pression is strengthened by the subse- quent conduct of the blacks, in attempt' ing to cut off the remainder of the party from the boat. There is still the possi- bility, however, that Mr. ROBIRTB is living. Instances have occurred, of a j solitary white man living with a tribe of natives for a number of years, and after- wards being restored to civilisa- tion. This bsro possibility of Hr.
