CORRESPONDENCE. BETTER LANGUAGE, PLEASE. [Newspaper Article] — The Times and Northern Advertiser, Peterborough, South Australia — 28 May 1920

CORRESPONDENCE. BETTER LANGUAGE, PLEASE. Sir-There is much talk now of a universal language and the necessity therefore-Esperanto. In view of the almost universal ignorance on the sub ject, 1 think it would be a happy i'lea to introduce it to the players in local and other football matches. It would save much embarrassment to ladies and others present, for the dinkum digger, and other lurid remarks one hears at these contests occasionally, makes the decent among the onlookers feel, to sav the least of it, uncomfortable. On Saturday at Yongala, the remarks were far from drawing-room like, and some would have put the smoking-room even to the bTush. The central umpire, I believe, lined up the Yongala men and pleadingly protested that they painted their phrases less vividly. This "may or may not have been deserved, but I think, speaking as an impartial specta tor, that a little censure for the other side was more than necessary, as, not in one, but in several instances, our friends from...

British Research in Turbine Steels. [Newspaper Article] — The Times and Northern Advertiser, Peterborough, South Australia — 28 May 1920

British Research in Turbine Steels. Valuable research has been undertaken by Dr. W. K. Hat" field (of the Brown-Firth Re search Laboratories, Sheffield), Mr. H. M. Duncan, and Mr. A. D. Parsons at the instance of the British Electrical and Allied Manufacturers' Association in order to find out what tests might usefully be added to the mechan ical tests already specified for steels used in steam turbine1'. Eleven different kinds of test were examined with minute care, and the results, whic^i form a kind of interim report, were em^ bodied in a paper read before the North-East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders. This important investigation, which affords a typical case of the co-operative industrial re search now being undertaken by British manufacturers ia to be continued. TOPICS. [Newspaper Article] — The Times and Northern Advertiser, Peterborough, South Australia — 28 May 1920

TOPICS. The Burgs for the premiership like Kingbier for the City-a good tiling. Clever tactics and not actual breaches were awarded the majority of frees. Umpire, watch them! High marking and long kicking were a feature of the game, while dirty play was conspicuous by its absence. The goalkickers for the winners were: Peters 3, Virgin 1, Adams' 1, Coffin l. King l. For Burgs: Lei cester 2. Meadows 2, Edmunds 2, Tripney 1. _ Last year's premiers (Rammers) were put to a solid test last Saturday. Although they succeeded in wearing down their opponents, a different tale may be told when they meet again. The experience in captaining a team won the game on Saturday. Adams (Ramblers) knew where to place his men and keep them in places allotted, while Mitchell (Burgs) did not re mind his men of the latter, but allow ance must be made as Mitchell met with two painful mishaps. At the end of the first quarter his' shoulder was put out, and the only position he could take was in goals. During t...

N.E.A. FOOTBALL ASSOCIA TION. RAMBLERS V. BURGS. In consequence of the calm though bleak weather last week, a large crowd assembled on the Peterborough show ground to witness the footbal! match between the above two teams. .That a good game would result was expected by all, and no one left the oval -disappointed with the result. Both teams had their full strength in the field, and play was commenced shortly after three o'clock. Through out the game was very fast and open, scrimmages were very rare. Burg's skipper won the toss and he selected to lack with a slight breeze in hi; favour, but it was of very little ad vantage. Burgs opened with attack ing. and thty soon threatened dan ger. but the Ramblers were the iirst to score a point, which was retalia ted by the Burgs for a similar score.
