ELECTRICAL ASSOCIATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 13 July 1914

ELECTRICAL ASSOCIATIONS. The movement among the Electrical Associations of Australia to establish a Federal Council had common sense and unassailable advantages to back it from the outset. Yet, like all similarly placed reform, it sooner or later became affected with reac ' tionary influences and was given up for dead several times. It seemed to be revivified, however, by a good sleep, only to have disappointing relapses into the comatose. This time, however, it certainly docs appear that something will be doing. If not the promoters should think seriously of changing the farce. The audience tires.

THE ARCHITECT-ENGINEER. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 13 July 1914

;Vt . THE ..ARCHITECT-ENGINEER. Following on a paper read by the late Colonel Vernon, F.R.I.B.A., before a Science Congress, some interesting interviews were published in ''Building'. Magazine relative to the conditions making for the evolution of the architect-engineer. The subject has always been a pet one of our Editor and he refers to it again in the first budget of his travel notes, appearing in July 'Building.' Presi dent Walter Reeks, of the N.S.W. Engineering' Association mentioned the matter in the course of his speech at the architects' dinner the other week. He said : — 'I feel that almost every day the professions arc being brought closer together. There is a reciproc ity going on that makes it almost impossible to now say where architecture ends and where civil engi neering commences.' Continuing, the President referred to the building of great sheds over ships in course of construction. In this work, he said, ingenuity and. skill of the highest degree were evidenced. T...

ENGINEERING PROFESSION. A Big Australian Movement. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 13 July 1914

ENGINEERING PROFESSION. A Bis: Australian Movement. The consistent advocacy by this journal and 'Building' Magazine for a federation of the engi neering profession in Australia, would seem, through the initiative of Mr. James Alex. Smith of the Victorian Institute, to be within reasonable chance of consummation. The first active and definite step was taken at the meeting of the Vic torian body on June 10. It was then resolved, subject to conhrmation at a special general meeting, that the Institute should seek' incorporation under the title, 'Australian Institute of Engineers,' Vic torian Section being implied. The President, Colonel Monash, in calling upon the mover (Mr. Jas. Alex. Smith) to propound the proposal, dwelt upon the fact that incorporation had become essential to the further progress and j«m.iiiiii.iiiiiiiiiii»niiiiiiii«l»i-»..i ? gn^TOTamnminii^iiiyimi future stability of the Institute. N.S.W. . ELECTRICAL ACT. A 'conference of professional institutes arranged by the Rlectrical Association has further considered -? the advisablencss of an Electrical Act for the State'!'': A deputation is to wait upon the Government and urge the passing of- the- measure. ? 'The National. No law was ever enacted for. the purpose of unduly harassing people, and the sooner that is recognised, the sooner,. a good Act will be administered in a manner which will prove purely just and reasonable.' The Engineer in Local Government. AUSTRALASIAN ENGINEERS. A Word on Nationalism. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 13 July 1914

The Engineer in Local Government. AUSTRALASIAN ENGINEERS. A Word on Nationalism. As a result of a eonfereneq between representa tives of the Victorian Section of the institute oj Local Government Engineers of Australasia and the Institute of Municipal Engineers of Victoria, cer tain decisions were arrived at which will be placed before general meetings of the members of both bodies. It is satisfactory to note that the desira bility of an amalgamation was affirmed, but the means of effecting it are not likely to meet with the approval of the Federal Council as representative of the various State sections of the Institute and of their, members who support the solidarity of the profession through the one great Institute with autonomous sections. It is proposed that the members of the -Victorian: Section form the Institute of Municipal Engineers of Victoria, Avhich, as its name infers, is a purely State body. The policy of the Federal Institute from the outset has been one of no surrend...

A SHIPBUILDING REMINISCENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 13 July 1914

A SHIPBUILDING REMINISCENCE. Mr. Hugh Paton (Sydney) writes: — 'The article in the April issue of 'Building,'- oh ? 'Modern Shipbuilding.' by Mr. Walter Reeks, inter ested me very much, and particularly because the illustration of an old_ style shipbuilding, yard, , on page 112, is that of my uncle's. The partners in the firm 'of Henry 'Murray & Co: ' were* '.Henry Murray, Archibald Crawford and my uncle and namesake. Hugh ,1'aton. Many and many a time, as a boy. have [?
