COOKING RIPE SALTED OLIVES. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 9 October 1896

COOKING RIPE SALTED OLIVES. After taking out the stones, pepper the olives-r-add a pinch of cayenne. Take a piece of thin tender steak or a piece of beef about the size to make a sausage roll. Lay in the olives aud tie round with a string to about the size of a German sau sage. Put them in the stew pan aud stew till the gravy is thick. Don't put' in any salt, as the olives are just out of the brine. Skim as the gravy rises unless you like the gravy fat. A spoonful of red wine is an improvement. A few of the olives in a hash or stew gives flavor and richness.— Garden and Field."

li 0 6 ft If HEWS. > • Miss G. H. Spence gave a lecture at; < tbe Mission Hall last Tuesday evening on " Our Political Responsibilities and Effecting Voting." Mr. C, H. Hol lingdrake, J.P., occupied the chair and the sitting accommodation of the hall was nearly filled by a selcct and in- ' telligent audience. Miss Spence dealt with her subjects in a fluent and in teresting manner and then gave a practical illustartion of the Hare Spence system of voting, in which 66 ladies and gentlemen took part. The lecturer convinced those present of its absolute fairness, and said she had advocated the system since 1859. and, though over 70 years of sge, she hoped to live to see it adopted in South Aus tralia. The veteran lady quite capti-; vated her audience and tbe vote of thanks, proposed by Mr. J. Price and seconded by Mrs. C. F. Chaffey, was carried with enthusiastic acclamation. Miss Sponce has kindly consented to give another lecture at the Wesleyan Church this evening on " ...

FRUITGROWERS' MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 9 October 1896

FRUITGROWERS' MEETING. A meeting of fruitgrowers, convened by the Fruit Packing Union, to meet Mr. P. Wood, of Messrs. G. Wood, Son and Co., agents of the Union, was held at the Institute on Tuesday evening, the 29th ultimo. There was a good atendance and Colonel Morant, Chairman of Directors, presided. The chairman, having introduced Mr. Wood, that gentleman said he was pleased to meet Renmark growers and give an account of his stewardship. Since the date of his last report, his firm had, he was happy to say, dis posed practically of the entire balance of the 1895 raisins. As to the 1896 crop, Mr. Wood, announced his em phatic opinion, that the apricots were undoubtedly superior to the Califor nian fruit, being more uniform in size and of a better colour. They had sold well in Queensland and New South Wales, where Californian fruit had had a considerable lead. His cor respondents in London cabled that they could secure a satisfactory export price in London, but it was not necessary...

The Pioneer. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9. 1896. HOTEL, QUESTION. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 9 October 1896

C|]C |ltonrcr, FJUDAY, OCTOBER 9. 1896. HOTEL, QUESTION. The Gothenburg clauses <>f the Licensed Victu : ajlers' Bill have been rejected, leaving the Renmark hotel question in statu quo* The Lfieal Progresa Committee has been defeated, though riot disgraced, and we would urge that body .to proceed vigorously with an agitation, which has been all but triumphant. Probably no one will accuse the Com mit teb, individually or collectively1, of any profound acquaintance with this much-vaiinted system of running public houses, in a double sense, in the public interest. However it seems that the settle* ment is not, after all, to have a patent double action public house. Well, after stipulating for good ejector ap pliances—not necessarily made in Ger many—Benmark can with equanimity forgo the satisfaction of furnishing, to the world at large, yet another object lesson. A public house, not the exposition and practice of a theory, however ex cellent, has beqn the aim and object ...

AS OTHERS SEE US. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 9 October 1896

AS ftTHEBS SEE US. It ia sufficiently disagree able to the raisin growers of Ren mark to have bjeii obliged, in disposing of their 1896 fruit, to face au overstocked Provincial market, and to make a preliminary attack upon the export trade, without being held up as an awful example of the evils of non combination. The latest issue of the I i Milium Cultivator contains a report ol j • 1 a Raisin Trust meeting, whereat a re- j turn, recently published in these columns, was employed, in the hands of a gentleman ostentatiously selected , by reason of hisacquaintnacewith the: subject, to present the horrid features of the Benm&rk bogey. Far be it from us to assert that co-operation has reached a final and perfect stage in this settlement, but Bentnark has at least refrained from making a complicated hash of its public affairs by insistance on petty bickorings. The true in wardness of the quoted return is known to our growers, who are also informed of the improvement in succeeding...

ARRESTING A DESPERADO. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 9 October 1896

ARRESTING A DESPERADO; You would never suspect Captain Gale of being an United States officer of the law. Yet his quiet grey eye could flash fire at the suspicious-look ing individual, his unassuming bag contained revolvers, handcuffs, and various pharaphernalia pertaining to his craft. In his breast pocket he generally carried a book full of war rants. His business was to look ufter the international revenue law, and the man who slyly sold liquor without a licence generally managed to evade just long enough to feel secure, when Gale would drop in upon him, and kindly, almost gently invite him to take a walk with him. Those who knew Captain Gale sub mitted to the walk gracefully, Thost who did not, and resented his inter ference, never did so more than once. He was unrelenting in his pursuit of :i fugitive, and with an intuition bettei known as keen judgment, he could pu put his finger, figuratively speaking upon the very move his man wolilc. make. One dark, dismal day he was bein«....
