MENTAL ARCHITECTURE. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 25 November 1893

I MENTAL ARClHITECTURE. [BY IsAAo BATEY.] Very probably a section of your readers will imagine that the writer- of this is an extraordinary genius, whilst others will fancy that he is a veritable donkey, who is charmed with the loud ness of his own braying. To a certain extent I admit that impeachment, and freely own that a spice of personal vanity is responsible for my inkslinging propensities. At the same time those who read are left to judge if my com positions are above mediocrity. I am vain enough to think that I have graspad some little amount of inven tiveness, but I am not particularly in love with my style of writing. If we carefully peruse the best authors we discover that each has his peculiar style, natural in most cases, yet in some artificial or servile in following the models of others., Respecting my small gifts in this line I am egotistical enough to arrive at the conclusion that I have risen superior, to my origin and 1 education. Moreover, I am covinced that as .l...

NOTHING EXTRAORDINARY IN THAT. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 2 December 1893

NOTHING, EXTRAORDINARY IN THAT. Some ten or twelve years ago an inci dent occurred at Gibraltar which illus trates the practical views of a certain class of people. ,, A subaltern named, O'Donohue was the officer of the guard at the Elphin stone Guard. At this point of the world knowni rock there is a sheer drop of over I,ooo feet. A lieutenant who had taken too much champagne at-a mess dinner walked over the rock and undoubtedly was dead be fore he reached the rocks below. When the officer of the guard upon being relieved made out his report of his guard, he made no mention of the fact. Indeed, when he camne to fill in his re port and reached the question, " Has any thing extraordinary happened while you were officer of the guard ?" he wrote in the blank space reserved for the answer, " Nothing." Of course, Tie was summoned before Lord Napier, of Magdala, the Governor of Gibraltar. When he appeared, Lord Napier asked "You were the officer- of the.guard at Elphinstone Guard yesterda...

EARLY RISING. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 2 December 1893

EARLY RISING. Early rising is synonymous in long life histories with short sleeping, which means rapid recovery from fatigue, a sign of bodily strength. These scientific facts in no wise contra dict the alleged value of early rising as a practice to be cultivated by all persons in good health. It is excellent as moral discipline, and eminently healthy as a matter of fact. Most persons will eat three meals daily. When a man gets up late those meals will probably follow each other at too short intervals to be wholesome. When he is an early riser it will probably be otherwise, He can enjoy a good breakfast, and by the time for his lunch or mid-day dinner he will have an honest appetite again.

PREVENTIVE OF CONSUMPTION. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 2 December 1893

PREVENTIVE OF"CONSU'MPTION. Dr. Ruish says that the' Germans are seldom-afflicted with conisumption ; and this, he believes, is in part occasioned by the strength which their lungs acquire by exercising them in vocal music, for this constitutes an essential branch of their education. A music master is still more in favour of this opinion. He states that he has known several instances of per sons strongly disposed to consumption, having been restored to health by the exercise of their lungs in singing.

Don't you love me any more ?" " My darling, I love you as much as ever, but you are soon to be married, and- I am trying to gradually prepare you for the change."
