FRANCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

FRANCE. In the year 1781, owing to the friendship for Israelites of several noted Frenchmen, an agitation for Jewish freedom was begun, which movement was ended on September 27, 1791, by full emancipation of the Israelites. The legend, ' Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.' could not be quoted for the new French nation, unless all the inhabitants shared therein, thus France was the first modern constitution to give full rights and pri vileges to the Israelites. This, however, seems to have been mere lip service, if we may judge by the cable reports of recent date France has utterly failed to imbue her citizens with the meaning of her motto, and ' Liberty, Equality, Fraternity,' is only cheap phraseo logy. Till now in the forefront of civilized nations, France, by a Semitic persecution, has put forth her cloven foot and shown her Mephistophelian spirit, The struggle of her erstwhile statesman has been tor naught, and the country that has brought forth Jewish generals has lapsed most lamen...

JERUSALEM. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

JERUSALEM. Though the weather still continues severe, Jerusalem is crowded with American and English visitors. Prince Alfred of Saxe-Coburg is staying at the Grand Hotel, and the Vanderbilts, with a large party of friends, are shortly expected. I regret to add that all this host of tourists does not include a single Jew.

SOUTH AFRICA. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

SOUTH AFRICA. It is interesting to note that Mr. Leopold Grahame I has taken over the Johannesburg Times, a .local daily, I The policy will be progressive, fearless, and English, I and with Mr. L. Grahame as managing director, backed I by unlimited money, the paper should develop in the I near future as the representative of capital and the I Uitlander. j The first half-yearly report and balance-sheet of the Johannesburg Jewish Guild shows that the peculiar feature about the Guild is that whilst ail or nearly all, the money is obtained from Jewish sources, the profits are divided amongst all creeds. The magnanimity of the Guild is all the more remarkable as the local Jewish charities are complaining bitterly of the lack of funds. The income of the Guild during the half-year was ;£128 which was spent on charitable institutions.

GERMANY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

GERMANY. The Jewish people in Prague received fifty thousand florins, a donation from Frankfort, to be used in relief of the sufferers of the anti-Semite mob which occurred in that city recently. During the course of a debate in the Reichstag on the military estimates, the anti-Semites deprecated the promotion of Jews to the rank of officers and surgeons ?————I ? . — — — M ?* on the ground of their ' unsoldierlike spirit.' Herr Richier vigorously repudiated this. He said that in 1870 an extremely large proportion of Jews were engaged, and that 83 out of 1600 were decorated with the Iron Cross, while 36 out of 70 Jewish surgeons received the same distinction. The notorious D . Ahlwardt attempted to rehash the story of defective rifles said to have been supplied by the Jewish firm of Loewe. He said that a large quantity of the defective rifles sold to the authorities were supplied by Loewe, to which Gsn. von. Gossler, the Minister for War, replied, l- No ; they are old French rifles o...

"Quo Vadis?" [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

'Quo Vadis?' Whence come, and whither go we, who shall say 1 Some enter in, and others tike their flight. Loves gives itself, and at the death of day, Love often sleeps — sleeps in undreaming night. ? - -? The morrow comes, the children of to-day Are men and women, who in turn we see Act out their parts, like puppets in the play, And life remains an unsolved mystery. * nd as we watch the play. Time onward flies, We see thorn meet with many hopes and fears ; We hear their muttered prayers and stifled cries, We see their laughter turn to bitter tears. Before they're g.irnered in by ' Father Time,' . They meet with much of pathos, and of pain ; They meet in turn the self-same steeps to climb, And here s a bit of sunshine, there of rain. Here's a crushed life, and there's a broken heart. Here riches flaants itself, and there's a slave ; Each has his role, each plays his given part, And then, ah 1 well, what matters it, the grave. And when they're gone, and vanished are their faces, We y...

Royal Agricultural Society of N. S. W. ANNUAL EXHIBITION. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

Royal Agricultural Society of N. 5. W. ANNUAL EXHIBITION. The attendances at the Exhibition of this Society were the largest yet recorded, and the exhibits were 'even of better quality and finer workmanship than in ^previous years. Messrs. Aulsebrook and Co. were deservedly successful with their biscuit exhibits, and it ?did not require much trouble to place the location of the film's stall, as each child recognised the where abouts of their favorite ' Neva Biscuit,' and the adults taking the opportunity of purchasing a parcel for home consumption. Mr. Nathan Jacobs had a Model Clothing Factory at work, for which he received a special gold medal. About fifty girls were at work, completing clothing at astonishing rates. The greatest novelty at the stand it would be hard to particularise, as one machine was employed sewing on buttons, (an almost incredible fact), another making button holes, whilst a third employed two needles for stitching seams Atcherley and Dawson's Globe was a lan...

Hatred of the Jews. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

Hatred of the Jews. One cf the mot striking evidences of unrest in Europe, and one that is quite commonly said to mark reversion to the bab rism of past tiires (says a writer in the Mel ourne ' Ar^us ') is the revival of hatred against the Jews. Perhaps you do not believe in it much, you at the more peaceful other end of the world, but you safely may. The peoples of Continental Europe differ widely in sentiment, ttmperament, sym pathy, circumstance, and ma y other things ; yet the rekindled hatred of the Jews spreads from nation to -nation, as if all were one, and seems to be the same everywhere both in character and force. 1 he Jews themselves wish to explain this outbreak by religious bigotry, the old persecuting spirit of the Middle Ages the chief blame for its levival being thrown upon the Catholics. There cannot be many J ws, however, who really believe in this explanation. They must know that it is not for their faith that they are abused, nor only by patriots who are also fan...

NEW ZEALAND. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

NEW ZEALAND. Mr. Joseph Myers, one of the members of the Welling ton (New Zealand) Council, met with a serious adven ture on the night of March 24th. On his way up Aurora terrace at the conclusion of the Council's meeting, after 11 o'clock, he was about to stoop to examine what he took to be either a parcel or a child which lay in the roadway, when he felt two rapid blows on his head from behind, and then received another on the back of the neck, which left him insensible. Almost simultaneously with the delivery of the last blow he ucaiu ma asscuiciiii cA.uid.iiu, my »jruu i it s me wrong man.' Devonshire Street Cemetery. To the Editor of the "Hebrew Standard." [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 April 1898

Devonshire Street Cemetery. To the Editor of the 'Hebrew Standard.' Sir,— Passing by the above ' Kaver Ovous ' the other day, I was pleased to note that the caretaker, Mr. Liebier, was engaged with some workman in apparently instructing him about the straightening up or resetting of certain tombstones that had trended out of the per pendicular, which I thought if being attended to as a general matter in this closed ground, is creditable to those who are causing the same to be done ; as for very many years this sepulchure, as with most of the neighbouring ones, has been allowed to get into a most forlorn, weed-bearing and neglected state. Not that I for a moment advocate their beautification into botanic gardens ; on the contrary, and especially with our Jewish section we have no right to beautify such places in such manner, but we have a right and duty to perform in seeing that such places do not -irelapse into dense scrubs and wilderness of weeds to the exclusion of the growth of W...
