HOW CAN INFLATION BE CHECKED? [Newspaper Article] — Western Star — 22 April 1949

HOW CAN INFLATION BE CHECKED? By Dr. G. L, WOOD (Professor of Commerce, University of Mel bourne) Inflation, as we see It now. is 'lie situation which exists when, over a certain time, production has risen to one level but spend able money has risen to a much higher level. The problem then is to absorb the Increase in the amount of spendable money by a rapid and widespread Increase In the production of goods and ser vices, and to do this, moreover, ivith a limited labour force which is already fully employed. We cannot increase production quickly enough, under these conditions, to check the rise In prices and living costs, so measures have to be adopted to keep money (demand for goods) out of the markets for essential goods and services. It is the es sentials for Industry and livelihood •■hat are In abort supply, whilst the demand for non-essentials takes producers off the farm and out of i.ie...
