CHINESE REVENGE. THE ANGRY MANDARIN. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 10 June 1910

CHINESE REVENGE. THE ANGRY MANDARIN. A gruesome story of Chinese barbarity , Is related in the "North China Daily News" as having, occurred recently at Peking1. i A certain Mandarin's wife had incur- ' red the hatred of her husband's head steward because she had refused, to pro cure for the latter's son a coveted government appointment. The opportu nity to revenge himself, for which the aggrieved steward had long waited, at last presented itself. The mandarin was leaving on a short journey, and was overheard to say jestingly to his wife that he had'fully made up his mind to, have her buried alive. •' After his" master's departure, tlie chief' of the household solicited an .interview with the wife, and; making the customary low obeisance, told tier . that' he had come to carry out his master^ orders. The terrified lady protested' that it had been a joke,-tout' the steward, aided by: some menials, seized and gagged hqr'artd buried her alive in her own gardep.r- ■''' The fury of the pr...

HENLEY'S NEW RIVAL THE ZAMBESI REGATTA. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 10 June 1910

HENLEY'S NEW RIVAL THE ZAMBESI REGATTA. Tho Henley Regatta Committee must look to thejr laurels. u They are seriously threatened by far ,of£ African competitors, who are already making preparations for an , ambitious regatta to be held in July next 'on the' Zambesi River, The real danger lies in the fact that Sir Charles Metcalfe, the moving spirit of last summer's Zambesi's Regatta, was so pleased with its success that he pro poses to offer L1000 to the funds, of any university sending out the champion crew, and to invite representative ciglits of universities from all parts of the ' world. ' • There is a "spice" about boating on the Zambesi which makes Henley a foolish | picnic hy comparison. j There Is always an exciting possibility : of a coxswain disappearing down the mouth of a hippo, or of a crocodile tailing a slice out of a frail craft. | HIS HEEL DISAPPEARED. | An official of the British South Africa ■ Company told an Express" representa tive quite casually that one of the...

Mr M. J. Thompson's Grievances [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 10 June 1910

Mr M. J. Thompson's Grievances Mr M. J. Thompson, a well-known and very estimable farmer in the Canowindra district, complains of the treatment accorded him fit the last sitting of the local Land Board in Oowra under the following circum stances:—Somo time ago he leased some land adjoining his holding from the Crown, and with a view to making same reproductive as a grazing area he applied to the iocs! Land Board for permission to ringbark, and met with a flat refusal. Against that decision ho appealed, and he evidently made out a good case, because the Land Appeal Court referred the application back to the local Laud Board for re consideration. The case came on in due course at the last sitting of the Board, and what practically meant a second refusal resulted, seeing that on this occasion Mr Thompson was granted a privilege he already enjoys, viz., permission to ringbatk sapplinga of four inches in diameter and under. This is practically flouting the direc tion of the Land Appeal C...

Nyrang Creek. (From our Correspondent). [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 10 June 1910

Nyrang Creek. {Fiom our Correspondent). At a meeting of the Nyrang Pro gress Assaciatioo; hold recently, it was decided to ask the ^Eugowra Farmers and Settlers' Association to <v>-opprate in an effort to pet mk water con served jfor public use along the Cuno wiudra-liugowra road. Njw that the railway is nearing completion to Can owindra it is thought that this road must curry considerable team traffic and as there is no natural supply ex c-ept at Nyrang Cr ek, and this by no means permanent, it is .thought that something should be done to pro vide watering places. It was also decided to ask the Lauds Department when the reserves along the Eugnwra road will becoiui* available for settlement. The same meeting resolved to aga'n urge the Shire Council to erect finder posts at -various junctions of 1 icul roads and also to mak« some improve ments to the Goolagoiifr-Oanowindrii road, between the six and eight mil* pegs. Our local Debating Sieiefy ha* again made a start, (ff...

Canowindra to Gregra Railway (By " Early Duvn." Eugowra.) I have noticed that the people of Orange nro making strong reprenpntii tions and agitating for a railway from Cuaowindr.i to Gregra in the interests ; of the residents of that nrntc and thei district of Orange. I do no": question ■ their right to -do so. or their right. to fair consideration «t the liiuidn of the ; Government.
