THE FRUIT CROPS. FAILURE IN SULTANAS. RENMARK, March 15. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Herald — 17 March 1910

THE FRUIT CROPS. FAILURE'IN SULTANAS. EENMARK. March 15. The damage done to fruit crops by the recent rain can now be more accurately estimated. Gordos do not appeal to be damaged greatly, save where the bunches rest on the ground, and currants are un scathed, except where the crop is parti cularly heavy, but closely packed bunches loaded on the vines as only irrigation can load (hem, are rotting badly. In sultanas the loss is variously estimated at from 80 to 40 per cent, of the whole crop, and the remainder will be of low grade. Of course, when once the berries begin to rot the damage spreads with every day they are left on the vines, so everyone is endeavoring to pick anti dry bis fruit as quickly as possible. Makeshift evapora tors are being used freely. A great deal of extra handling will be required, and some growers even have to cart their fruit in bv hand, as it is impossible to get on the land with a vehicle. This, combined with the exceptional rush caused by the rotting of...

THE CIVIL SERVICE. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Herald — 17 March 1910

THE CIVIL SERVICE. "D. S." writes:—"The Daily Herald's" Sijb-leader on the Civil Service, pub lisrieri in last Thursday's issue, was .greatly . appreciated by the rank and file of the Service. It has gone a long way towards breaking down the opinions of those who thought and said the Labor Party were inimical to Oe civil servants' interests. I should like to state through the columns of "The Daily Herald" that the splenffld efficiency of the Service to day cannot long continue without drastic amendment of the Civil Service Act. For the moment there are no inducements offered to become a civil servant. There is absolutely no probability of advance ment beyond a certain third-rate grade; the consequence of this is that the high standard now existing must in the future deteriorate. The essential parts of the 1B74 Act have been so mutilated that the civil servants have no rights under it; practically speaking, the ordinary glut hand Tias as much tehance of promotion as the officer who h...
