MARCH 19,1987 The crowds are hushed as the dribbling stops by Sean Weaver Collegian Staff Writer The roaring crowds hush as echos of continuous dribbling basketballs stop. The controversial and seeminglj biased 'zebra shirts' hang up their whistles, and coaches plan for a new and better season. This is the aura foi thousands of NCAA men's basketball teams across the U:S., including the Penn State University Behrend Cubs. The Cubs finished out the season with all and 14 mark; a notable improvement from last years' record of 6-19. Doug Zimmerman, coach of the men's team, expressed mixed feelings about the team's progress: "We looked forward to a good, winning season, but due to certain (uncontrollable) circumstances, we did not do as well as we expected." In the first semester of play, the Cubs maintained a record of 3-3. Going into the second semester of their season, however, four team members could not or for other occurences did not return to play. One of these four wa...

_fS11 sports An inconsistent season hampers the Lady hoopsters by David Bruce Collegian Staff Writer "It was an inconsistent season," said Karin Sobotta, coach of the Behrend Women's Basketball team,"We began the season 1-8, but we went 8-8 in the second half of the season to finish 9-16." Much of the inconsistent play can be attributed to the youthfulness of the team. Six As for individual performances, Coach Sobotta was especially pleased with Sonya Sickles and Michele Madison. "Sonya came to the team in January (from West Virginia) and immediately became an impact player. She is strong and plays excellent defense. She knows how to play the game," said Coach Sobotta. "Michelle was the second leading rebounder on the team and made many clutch baskets, she is an excellent outside shooter." As for the team, the coach said tfiat the best performances -were against Frostburg, Geneva and Buffalo State. freshmen and two sophomores were on this season's roster. "We would play gr...

Lady Cubs practice by Michael Cifelli Collegian Staff Writer The women's softball team is back in the swing. Coming off a 3-16-1 mark from a year ago, the Diamondettes hope to turn things around this year. Leading, the girls' spring campaign is first year coach Anne Burbules. A Mercyhurst graduate, coach Burbules has the team conditioning 6-7 days a week. Their workouts concentrate on the basics: hitting in the cage, bunting, and infielding, with a half-hour devoted to pitchers. In the earlier portion of the pre-season, the team worked on flexibility and strength training. "I want to keep them working," says coach Burbules. Inexperience will be a factor in the Cubs season, with only two letter-winners returning. Sue Holmes and Lisa Butch will be counted on heavily to provide leadership for the girls, who are all freshmen. Due to last year's record, coach Burbules expects her squad to be underestimated by many opponents. One of her goals is, "to gain respect." The coach went ...

Dedication doesn't stop at the end of the season by Angel Papaleo Collegian Staff Writer For those of you not affiliated with any type of competitive athletic sport, dedication does not stop when the season ends. The desire to reach the. best to your ability exists all year round. The Perm State-Behrend men's soccer team also has this desire. Therefore they " continue to play during the off-season to improve their skills and better theii performances. The indoor soccer team here at Behrend trains during the week and competes in three different competitions. The first one was played in a tournament, February 21, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania against Alderson Bradas, a team from West Virginia. The Cubs lost this match 8-1. After speaking with their coach, Herb Lauffer, he feels it's due to the fact that the team had difficulty adjusting. "We tried different combinations but we just couldn't get settled," he says. Club Volleyball expects improvement by Michael Cifelli Collegian Staff Writer It's something very familiar with a few Behrend athletic teamsinexperience. That is an obstacle that the men's volleyball team has had to face this season. According to Dr. Light, the Cub coach, "this year's team is even younger than last year's squad." That's extremely young, considering last year's team had six freshmen on a ten-man roster. Dr. Light went on to comment that, "It's even more difficult when we get to practice only twice a week." In their first tournament appearance, the Cubs placed ninth out of twelve teams at IUP. Since then, the squad has slipped to a record of 1-5. Dr. Light pointed out that, "We've lost a lot of close games." One instance in which the volleyball team has fallen short was against Pitt. The Cubs dropped three games by identical scores of 15-13. They have also been defeated by Allegheny, twice, as well as IUP and Genessee. Their bright spot of the season so far ha...
