(From The Evening1 Post.) THE PRIEST AND THE ROBBER. Madame de Beaumont relates the following story : Last summer, while in the country, I made the acquaintance of a very venerable and worthy Roman Catholic Priest* who was upwards of eighty years of age. More than forty years ago, said- be, I was sent for from the prison for criminals, to confess a highway robber, condemned to death ; and, as was the custom at that time, I was locked up with the prisoner in the small chapel I attached to the prison. I used all the arguments enjoined by oor holy religion, and did my best to bring the poor fellow to a sense of his terrible situation, and his urgent need of repentance, but all my efforts appeared to make no impression. He was absent minded, preoccupied, and did not seem ever to bear me. " Yoang man," said I, " do you realize the dreadful certainty that at sunrise, this, very day, your soul must appear before the throne of God ? Why do you not listen to my exhortations ; and wha...

President's Message Fillnte-Citiztns of the Senate, and House of Representatives : When we compare the condition of the conntry ot the present day with what it wasayenr ago, at the meeting of Congress, we have mnch reason for gratitude to that Almighty Providence, which has never failed to interpose for onr relief, at the most critical period of our history. One year ago the sectional strife between the Xorth and the South, on the dan gerons subject-of Slavery, had again become so intense as to threaten the peace and perpetuity of the confederacy. The application for the admission of Kansas as a State into the Union, fostered tin's unhappy agitation, and brought tho whole subject once more before Congress. It was the desire of every patriot that such a measure of legislation might be adopted as' would remove the agitaliou from the States, and confine it to the. Territory where it legitimately belonged. Much ha* been done, I am happy to say, towards the. accomplishment of tliis...
