The Legislature at its last session! took measures to secure the quiet of the Indians by purchasing their lands, and providing for the removal of the tribes.'.."' Newspaper Postage. : ^ It will be seen by the following ..that the interests of the Country, press are not entirely overlooked or forgotten in Congress Mr. Sackett asked the attention of the committee to the subject of country newspapers.: If we are to secure revenue from them he said the postage of that branch of the ser-" vice lhost be greatly reduced. As the matter now stands, not more than five. per. cent, of, the weekly newspapers jof the whole countryipress passithrongh the: mails.'; In fnctnearly the whole circulatiiri, except exchanges, are sent by carriers op by other than the mail service. ; This is prejudicial both to the people and the revenues pf the Department.
