Seeding Meadow [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 29 February 1896

Seeding Meadow I WOULD say to Frederick 0 . Lawrence 1 that Illinois Is a large state , having much difference as to climate and soil and consequently much difference as to kinds of grasses and In time for sowing them and the manner in which they should be sown . For thirty years I lived in southern Iowa on a line with Peoria , 111 . There I should sow red clover and timothy on stubble land , that is , where wheat or oats had been previous year ; sow It alone about the time of the last snows , either on a little skiff of snow or when the soil was wet and raised up with frost , then when the ground thaws during the day the seed Is carried down into the soil . • One bushel of clover seed sows seven acres and one of timothy seed four acres . Keep weeds mown down . In that section blue grass is a splendid pasture grass , but not for a meadow . My next experience was In south Missouri on a line with southern Illinois . There I sowed both crops with oats in the early spring . Timothy was ...

Columbia ' s Emblem [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 29 February 1896

Columbia s Emblem In all discussion as to the flower tbat shall be selected as the emblem for our country , some have leaned toward the Trailing Arbutus—the fresh , fragrant and exquisitely tinted Mayflower of Now England—found , also , in the highlands of the Hudson and in Michigan ; another , moved no doubt by the eloquent pleas for the favorite flower , inclining to the Golden Bod , as being found more generally in every part of the country . But the poem of Edna Dean Proctor , which appeared in the Century last fall , has carried conviction and an enthusias tic assent to the selection of corn—the Indian maize—as beijg native , characteristic , and altogether appropriate Miss Proctor , with the instinct of a true poet , has interpreted the American taste and preference . If the choice were put to vote , with these winning and convincing lines freely circulated among the peoplo , there could be no doubt of the decision . We quote the closing stanza : The rose may bloom for England...
