HORSEMANSHIP . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 14 January 1854

HORSEMANSHIP . A late work oa horsemanship says : — Ou the race course aud iu the hunting field the inhabitants of the British Isles are looked upon as the best horsemeu in the -world . They are not so en parade , whether in the park or at military review .. With short stirrup they ride well ; with long and loosened one not so well as the Spaniard or the Frenofeman . In athletic exercises the Briton is a great despiser of rules , and too frequently thinks that natural ability early exercised , is quite sufficient to produce perfection , and that artistic education is not necessary . There can be no doubt thatsome have the gift , as it is called , for riding- and managing horses on the road and in the field , and there can be little doubt that it is a great advan ~ . lage to be set on horseback in childhood . Having the gift , and calling it into play in the second slage of life , when with satchell and shining morning face , & c , will produce the good and daring rider ,...

Extraordinary Gift Enterprise ! [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 21 January 1854

Extraordinary Gift Enterprise ! UNPARALLELED AND UNPRECEDENTED LIBERALITY !! BOWERY AGAINST BROADWAY ! OREAT TRIUMPH OF CHARLEY WHITE . We never heard of a more daring and successful attempt to defeat the operations of the law against lotteries than that just brought to light in this city . It appears that a gentleman named White , more familiarly known in sporting circles as Charley White , Proprietor of the Melodeon , in the Bowery , conceived the astounding and unprecedented idea of getting up a Gift Enterprise on a plan similar to ihose of the renowned Jollie . Perham , Jones , and others . The idea once conceived , Mr . White immediately made arrangements on a pcale of liberality fully equal to anything of the kind over before attempted in this city . Mr . White purchased Gifts of princely munificence , far surpassing those of Perham , which latter , like children , should have been seen but never heard of . The Bowery boys at once entered into tke spirit of the enterprise , an...

Another Calamity . The periodical calamities with w ] , j c j . our city and its inhabitants aro visited are beginning to attract the titiemion of the community , in order to devise bd _ ter means for the security oC lite and property .
