Earth Koads and Road Machines . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 17 April 1886
Earth Koads and Road Machines . Sagacious people all over the great prairie region of the West and Northwest are coming more and more to favor machinery in grading roads . The day of the shovel and pick is fast passing away , so far a 8 moving earth cheaply in road making is concerned . The old - time plow and dump scraper are fast following i n the wake of the pick and shovel except in minor repairs or when additional earth might he needed to fill some local dump . Machines are also now largely used for surface ditches , water carriers , and even in the excavation of ditches for carrying large bodies of water . Hence anything that saves labor in this work is important to the farmer , and especially so now , in view of the important convention of Road Commissioners which occurs at THE BOSS ROAD GRADER AND LEVELER . Sorghum Cultivation . For early cane plant Early Amber , Medium Early Orange and Kansas Orange , there being but little difference between these varieties . For late , either the Honduras or Texas . Be sure you get good seed , not only that which will germinate , but also that of good quality . There is very considerable difference in the yield of some of the varieties of cane , and you want seed from varieties that yield well . See that the soil is thoroughly cleaned up before plowing . Weeds , stalks and grass interfere with the proper preparation of the soil , and the planting and cultivation of the crop . It will pay to take time to do this thoroughly . Plow well and harrow until the soil has a fine tilth . This is important . Rolling will aid materially in putting the soil in a good condition for planting . Plant from the 5 th to the 10 th of May . This I consider the best time , as by this time the soil is thoroughly warmed up . Mark off the rows three and a half or four feet ...

The Wool Growers Convention . The sheep shearing at St . Louis , hitherto noticed > n the FARM , FIELD AND STOCKMAN , really culminated in making the convention the important portion of the whole . All that money and intelligent action on the part of citizens of St . Louis to render the stay of the delegates and visitors pleasant was done . The Cotton Exchange was given up to the convention , and on Thursday a banquet was spread at the Exposition building , at which almost 800 guests sat down . At the convention proceedings proper , the whole of Tuesday was occupied in hand shaking and preliminary work , appointment of committees , etc . On Thursday President Delano called the convention to order at 10 A . M . After some preliminary work , Gen . Sherman was introduced . In his address congratulations were expressed at meeting so many prominent men from various parts of the country who were interested in the great industry of growing wool and mutton . He said there could b...
