goultra gard . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 2 May 1885

goultra gard . Care or Yonng Chicks . EDITOBS WSBXEBN BUBAL : —During the next three months , there will be thousands of young chicks hatched in this country . It is safe to say that one third of them will die before they are a month old . Ihe greater part of these oould be saved if they were rightly fed and oared for . When I first began rearing poultry 1 used to lose a great many chicks , bnt of late have not lost to exceed ten per cent . If any one wants to profit by my experlenoe and observation I will give you a few points , and if followed you will lose very few chicks unless the season should be very oold and wet whioh is always very hard on young chicks . If the season is unfavorable so muoh more need of extra oare . - The first month is the critical period , after that there is not so muoh danger . The coop should always have a floor ; a flour barrel makes as good a coop as you oan get . I say a flour barrel because it is the best made and will shed water better than any ot...

faAmltwtia v - W . M , Hoyt , Company . A few facts in connection with a firm whioh -hae for so long a time been one of the chief mediums in the oity through whioh the grocery trade has been done , aa the W . M . Hoyt Company , cannot fail to be of great general interest . The premises occupied by this firm are lboated at 1 , 3 , 5 , 7 and 9 Michigan Ave . and 1 to 9 River street . The location is historical being on the site of Fort . Dearborn , a name familiar to every historian and all readers of early history . With it is associated the settlement of Chicago . Beading the stone tablet placed by Mr . Hoyt in the north side of the building at the suggestion of the Chicago Historical Society , one oan see the clearings grow larger day by day , and the log houses bnilt by the skill and energy of the pioneer , becoming the centers of an ever growing expanse of rich and fertile land surrounded on all sides by the treacherous Indian and making it necessary to preserve a neverceasing vi...

^ ortfcitUnral [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 9 May 1885

^ ortfcitUnral Tobacco Shed . We seem at present to have a variety of questions in relation to the cultivation and harvesting of tobacco . A Richland Center , Wis ., correspondent asks for a description of a tobacco barn or shed . Our correspondent understands , we suppose , the object to be obtained in housing tobacco . As soon as the plant is sufficiently wilted so that it will not break easily it is taken to the barn . Some growers , says John B . Read , merely load tobajooo on a wagon as they do corn , handling carefully so as not to tear the leaves , and take it to the barn to put npon sticks , while others get it on the sticks in the fleld . The latter way is much the best . The plants should be hung upon lath . They are put on by means of a large steel needle , with a socket at one end , which fits on the end of the stick . The lath is laid npon a convenient horse , or one end is placed on a block lying on the ground , and the needle slipped on . The plant is then taken in bo...

|| orticuUural Cnltiration of Flowers . » - ~——™ , E DITOBS W ESTEBN BUBAL : —The last few days of sunshine were so enlivening that we felt the old longing , so natural , for walks in the woods , and work in the garden . As soon as the soil is dry enough to make it possible it is well to sow sweet peas ( quite deep and with plenty of manure in the trench ) and perennial herb and flower seed , for the few wintry days and frosts wiU not harm them as early drouth will do . Many hardy annuals may be planted early to getweU grown whUe the cool moist weather lasts in which they deUght , and flourish . Oneof the best of garden plants , I think , is the Tenweeks stock , it is so varied in coloring and delightful in fragrance . Then the snapdragon , with its new shades , and balsams like roses ; these with phlox and pansies , petunia and verbenas make a delightful garden . But there are others for old time sake we will have , the zinnia so nearly like dahlias , and four-o olooks with a few o...

$ * jy * Wt [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 9 May 1885

$ * jy * Wt Overworked Brains . Dr . Joseph Taber Johnson , in his lecture on A Sound Mind in a Sound Body , at Washington , D . C , said : Unsoundness of mind and body was frequently inherited from unsound parents , who have destroyed their vitality by lives of luxury , dissipation , crimes and acquired diseases , whioh have descended through various generations . Unsoundness of both mind and body were acquired by too early and too muoh schooling . After referring to various diseases , caused or aggravated by overcrowding and overheating school-rooms , the speaker gave instances of the overstrain of the nervous system in the coUeges , male and female . These breakdowns were not confined , he said to the colleges for young men and young women , where there . had been too great mental strain and too little healthful exercise in the open air , but instances of the same kind occurred in the mUitary and naval academies . The systems of averages and competitive examinations destroyed the...
