I POULTRY I [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 30 March 1907

I POULTRY I MANAGEMENT OP A BROODER . There is no mystery about raising chickens in a brooder , nor is it a task difficult to learn . I do not wish to be understood as meaning that it Is a work that any careless operator may hope to succeed in . It requires an intelligent understanding of what needs to be done , and a regular , careful attention to the details of the work . There is no reason why one should not raise as large a percent of chicks in a brooder as under hens . There are some reasons why the percent should be higher in a brooder . The lice question is not nearly so annoying ; and the brooder is always ready to warm the chicks , and on chilly , damp days this one point is of considerable importance . I have people tell me of hard luck with brooders . Of course the trouble may be with the faulty construction ot the brooder . But if it is made right and there is loss and worry , it is apt to be the result of failure in some important point . The stock may lack in vigor , a...

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BEGINNERS . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 30 March 1907

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BEGINNERS . The rules here given apply mainly to small town and suburban locations ¦ where it is necessary to keep the fowls In confinement . Have five feet of floor space in the poultry house for every fowl . Have the house well ventilated in the summer time , but not so as to cause drafts on the fowls . If possible have the roof shaded from the afternoon sun . Have large window space , all on the south side . In the summer this should be covered with wire screen instead of glass . Have the roosts about 4 ft . high , all on a level , on the north side of the house , and have no more roosts than will comfortably accommodate the fowls . Have a large nest room partitioned off and darkened . but always accessible to fowls from the interior of the hen-house . Have that portion of the floor not immediately under the roosts partitioned off with an 18-inch partition and filled a foot deep with any clean scratching litter . The droppings should be removed once a week or els...

A BEGINNER'S QUESTIONS . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 30 March 1907

A BEGINNERS QUESTIONS . C F . D ., Hartville , O ., says that he is a beginner in the poultry business , and he wants information on three questions that concern him at this time . 1 . He wants to know whether it would be safe to use eggs for hatching from pullets that have been laying all fall and winter when mated to a cockerel of the same age but not related . If the pullets are large for the breed and thrifty , and the male is a vigorous one , there is no reason why good results should not be expected from such a mating . It is true that it is not an ideal mating . A cock with pullets and a cockerel with hens is better , as a rule . The continued mating of cockerels with pullets is not the best way to increase size and vigor in one s flock . But the mating of fowls is not an exact science , and a cocker-el-pullet mating may often prove to be as satisfactory as any other , though the rule would say a cockerel-hen mating , or a cock-pullet mating . 2 . He wants to know how to hand...
