For the Scrap Book [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 March 1915

For the Scrap Book A New Use for Rain Energy is wasted in every direction , although during the last two or three years considerable ingenuity has been manifested in efforts to turn natural resources to account , says Chambers Journal . Thus the suns rays are being harnessed to furnish steam for pumping operations in Egypt and other tropical countries ; the wind is utilized for pumping and for the generation of electricity ; but so far no one has attempted to make profitable use of the rainfall , although a tremendous amount of energy is thereby running to waste . A correspondent in an American journal has recently pointed out what we are losing through our failure to make use of the rainfall . The district in which that observer resides was visited by a severe rainstorm , the fall of water aggregating 4 . 17 inches in ten hours over art area of ten square miles . He estimated the height of the rainclouds to be 5 , 000 feet , and on that basis some 6 , 000 , 000 , 000 pounds of wate...

Aix ^) toO & fii 3 M [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 March 1915

Aix ^) toO & fii 3 M Tenant or Land Owner ! By H . A . Bereman , Aurora , III . The big fault with our system of land tenures is the one-year lease . The one-year lease exists as the fruit of the speculative feature of farm ownership . With the value of farm lands constantly advancing , landowners are loath to tie up their rpoperty for a long term of years , preferring to ignore the maintenance of soil fertility and the thrifty care of buildings and equipment , for the larger gain hoped for by the unearned increment of enhancing land values . , Until we have something like the English system of leases for ten or twenty years , with a definite understanding between landlord and tenant as to how _ the land shall be farmed , what rotation shall be observed , what shall be done by way of fertilizing the fields , etc ., we will continue to see a great portion of American soils improved through robber tenants and robber owners . Either is a foe to civilization . All tenant sys...

iBbviIlS'l ^ faag m _ W _____________ m [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 March 1915

iBbviIlSl ^ faag m _ W _____________ m Dressing Hogs on the Farm It is best to keep the animal off feed for twelve to twenty-four hours previous to butchering , but allow it to drink all the water it will , as this tends to cool the body . By throwing the hog on its back and then straddling it behind the shoulders , one had may be used to keep the head down and the other to operate the sticking knife , which should be about six inches long and sharp on both edges . Before sticking the animal , feel for the breast bone and then cut an inch or two beyond it for a distance of four inches to afford a good opening . Keep the sticking knife in the center and pointed at an angle of about 45 degrees backward and toward the backbone and thus sever the blood vessels where they are spread from the chest cavity . A hog which has been stunned will not bleed as well as one which has not been stunnned previous to sticking . If it is desirable to shoot the hog the best place is behind the ear . Aft...

To remove the garlic flavor successfully , however , the milk must be raised to a temperature of 145 degrees and a method devised to keep the milk from foaming when the air is blowing through it .
