Talented Frosh Cindermen Display Promising Futures [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 6 October 1960

Talented Frosh Cindermen Display Promising Futures Northerners _\ Dominate 64 \ Track Lineup by Joe Lee Now that hazing has taken place and each freshman has been made to realize just exactly how inferior he is , some of the things in which the class of 64 can take pride may be pointed out . Among other things , the freshman can certainly feel proud of six trackmen , four from New Jersey and two from New England , who will , no doubt , have the entire student body feeling proud of them before long . The four New Jerseyites , Roger Caruso , Bob Linders , Ed Schmitt , and Jack Ubhaus , come to Georgetown highly recommended . Caruso , from Harrington Park , and Linders , from Halworth , were high school teamates at Northern Valley Regional in Demarest , where both individually and together , these boys managed great things . Roger won the National Interscholastic 440 yard championship indoors , the New Jersey Scholastic quarter mile title outdoors , and the Englewood Memorial Invitatio...

Frosh Cagers Sport Sharp HS Records by Dan Slattery With the opening day for basketball practice just a short time away , many Hoya fans are wondering what this year s freshman team will look like . New frosh mentor , Bob Reese , best summed up what his team should be like the other day , when he said that the boys are all well-built , good sized , and can run ; and that they should have a very fine record . Discussing his strategy for the coming season , Mr . Reese said that he will employ the fast break with great emphasis placed on defense . Forming the nucleus of his team will be seven scholarship boys from various parts of the country , all possessing fine high school credentials . Midwest Talent Heading a delegation from the Midwest is 6 5 , 220 lb . center Brian Egan from Chicago , Illinois . Brian was named first team all city , all state , and was rated honorable mention high school All-American in several basketball magazines . From Austin High in Detroit , Michigan where ...

Polo This Saturday Back At Woodlawn [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 6 October 1960

Polo This Saturday Back At Woodlawn The fascinating and highly demanding game of Polo is back in the limelight here at Georgetown as the Hoya malletmen host the Cavaliers from the University of Virginia at Woodlawn Plantation this Saturday afternoon at 3 : 00 . The decision to schedule a fall season was only made early this week due to the combined efforts of Club President Mike Raoul-Du-val and Jerry Shields . Shields , who took a leave of absence from the University late last year , missed the spring season but will be back in the lineup this fall . Perfect Site Woodlawn Planation is an ideal site for the sport as far as the spectator s interests are concerned . Last year s successes will genuinely attest to this . Carloads of Happy Hoyas and their dates came in droves to ¦ witness the spectacle in a picnic-like atmosphere and it is hoped that even greater turnouts will be enjoyed this year . The Cavaliers boast an outstanding squad this year , having romped over Winchester , 12-1...

NEW SCIENCE BUILDING Dr . Alan Waterman Delivers Dinner Address by Barry Mer gardt I want to express my thorough endorsement of the quotation made by Father Bunn , namely that the affairs of the world at present are really a symptom of the whole change of life and the attitude of man on earth . With this central thought in mind , Dr . Alan T . Waterman , director of the National Science Foundation , presented the main address at last Sunday s formal dinner following the groundbreaking ceremonies for the four million dollars plus Science Building . Before three hundred guests in New South Dining Hall , Dr . Waterman stressed the fact that a more universal education and a flexibility for changing situations were two of our most valuable advantages over the Soviet educational system . From a hypothetical hundred students in both countries starting their secondary education , he explained , about fifteen of our students will be graduated from college compared to seven in the USSR . Oui-...

Gentlemen of Georgetown [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 13 October 1960

Gentlemen of Georgetown The stage in Gaston Hall was filled with men of importance last Sunday afternoon . The ceremonial groundbreaking- for the new Science Building- had brought the President of the University and the Deans of its various schools , the Director of Kesearch of the United States Naval Research Laboratory , the Director of the National Science Foundation , comedian Bob Hope , and some members of the Presidents Council together on Gaston s ornate stage . As these g-entle-men looked out at the audience seated in Gaston Hall they saw an assembly of alumni , friends , and students of Georgetown , most in black tie , who had come to watch the ceremonies and listen to the speeches . As their eyes wandered to the balcony they also saw one student seated in grand isolation from his fellows , a paper cup of coffee in his hand and his feet and _leg-s sprawled over the seat in front of him . This particular gentleman of Georgetown was one of that small but obvious minority of G...

Dark at the Top of the Stairs marks a departure for William Inge from the conventional mode of Bus Stop or Come Back Little Sheba to the style of _Eug-ene ONeill . In this latest effort , a well defined problem is traced over a short period of time from the vantage of four or five major characters . This method was institutionalized in America by ONeill s Long Day s Journey into Night and indeed there are many parallels between Long- Day and Dark at the Top . Though Inge s work lacks the spectacular tragic element of ONeills , it maintains , I think , a more effective balance between tragic conflict and genuinely comic relief . And while the Floods are not so pathetic as the Tyrones _, they are more true to the American standard . Their tragedy is not a personal one but a national one and this universal appeal more than compensates for the lack of high tragedy . The Magic Lantern by Tom Scheye The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs Robert Preston ... Dorothy MacGuire Proceeding from such...
