§ wyftrht- tottfltmj Edited by st Practical Housekeeper Brother Jonathan -- -Cracker-. . I AUNT MARY ? gives ln THE WESTERN RURAL a recipe for a Urother Jonathan . I used to m ake them so , but have found out an easier and better way : Take one egg , one teacup of sour milk , one teacup of cream , one teaspoon of soda , anl mix to a stiff batter ; pour one-half in a long pie-tin , fill the tin nearly full of sliced apples , or other fruit , cover with the rest of the batter , put in an oven suitable for biscuit , and bake three-quarters of an hour . To be eaten with cream and sugar . The above quantity is sufficient for three or four persons . L . Wi H . wants a recipe for making crackers . Annual Agricultural Fairs , [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 22 August 1868

Annual Agricultural Fairs , The season of Agricultural Fairs is near at hand . Commencing In Illinois on the the first of September , it extends , in most of the States of the Northwest , half through October . It is presumed that the officers of the various Agricultural Societies have made the necessary preparations for their several Fairs , aurt it only remains for the people to do their part—and what they are reasonably expected to do—to make each exhibition useful , interesting and successful . It is too late to argue the utility and importance of such exhibitions . To say that they have degenerated—that they are badly managed in many instances—that objectionable and obnoxious features are oftentimes introduced by , the management of this or that Society ; or that tests are , unfair , or awards unjust—furnishes no argument against them reasonable or valid in the minds of fair and candid men . Abuses may -sometimes creep in ; they doubtless do ; so likewise do they in morals , ph...

THE POWDER-MILLS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 22 August 1868

THE POWDER-MILLS . ( Concluded from Page 276 . ] • How hideously smiled the wretch , whose thoughts were so cruel and murderous , as he stooped down and tore put a large flint from under the bush near which he stood , and , drawing out a small but heavy hammer , proceeded to pound the stone Into small angular fragments . With the cruel speed of a tiger , Green leaped rather than ran back to the glazingmill . The door was locked , but he drew a duplicate key from his pocket , and softly opened it . There were the barrels half full of powder , there the machinery connected with the outer wheel , to which the barrels were already fastened ; while over all arose the flimsy , black conical roof . In a moment , with the de...
