THE MISSIONARIES VS . GEORGIA . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 29 March 1832

THE MISSIONARIES VS . GEORGIA . WASHINGTON , March 3 d , 1832 . The Chief-Justice delivered this morning the opinion ofthe Supreme Court in the case I ofthe Cherokee Missionaries . I have never witnessed such an exhibition of anxiety to hear a decision as on this occasion . The court room was thronged with spectators , including many members of both Houses of Congress , who pressed on the Bench so much as almost to amount to an annoyance . The voice of the venerable Chief-Justice is so weak that it was impossible to catch the tenor ofthe argument which was contained in the opinion , and which led to the conclusion . The delivery of it occupied about an hour , and an expression of honest and honorable exultation flushed in every countenance ( for I saw no Georgia representative until after the judgment was pronounced ) when the venerable Judge declared it to be the decision of the Court that the sentence of which the Court tof Georgia had adjudged the plaintiff in eri ror to be impri...

MOST axtATXFrma . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 29 March 1832

MOST axtATXFrma . On Saturday last , the citizens of this place and County , were gratified by the arrival of the Steam Boat Talisman , J . W . POLLOCK , master , of 150 tons burthen , at the Portland landing , opposite this town . The safe arrival of a boat of the size of the Talisman , on a river never before navigated by steam , had created much solicitude , and the shores for miles were crowded by our citizens . — Her arrival at her destined port was hailed with loud acclamations and full demonstrations of pleasure . When Captain Bocan located his steam mill on Sangamo river , twelve months ago , and asserted his determination to land a steam boat there within a year , the idea was considered chimerical by some , and utterly impracti- j cable by others . The experiment has been made , and the result has been era successful as ti . -. most enthusiastic could expect . And this county owes a deep debt of gratitude to Captain BOGUE , for getting up the expedition , j and his never...
