Ohio the First to Respond [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Ohio the First to Respond Several thousand subscriptions expired with the December issue , and a coupon was sent out in each paper to parties whose subscriptions had expired . A strong plea was made for renewals , and Mr . W . H . Erb , Litchfield , Ohio , was the first man to respond to our appeal . Since then we have received a great many renewals , but we wish to here publicly express our appreciation of Mr . Erb s prompt attention to this most important matter . We cannot write you all a personal letter , but we want to here thank all of our friends who have responded to our appeal and sent in their renewals . We will make every effort to publish a better and more useful paper in 1911 than we have ever done before . This issue is larger than we have ever yet published and if breeders will come to our support in the way of advertising , we can put out as large a paper each month . We wish you all a very prosperous New Year in your Berkshire operations .

The Force That Makes the Wheels Go 'Round . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Force That Makes the Wheels Go Round . Advertising is to business what electricity is to the city—light and power . It is at once a gentle force that makes things clear and an irresistible force that makes things go . Advertising has sent the selling methods of the past generation to the scrapheap to keep company with the tallow dip and the horsecar . Founded on the most abstract of sciences , it concerns itself with the most concrete of facts . Wasteful and haphazard In its crude beginnings , it has revolutionized business because in its later development it has proved the most economical and efficient method of selling goods . Today manufacturers split pennies to find profits and split hairs to find costs . The old idea that an article is more expensive because it is advertised is exploded . As infallibly as water seeks the lowest possible level , modern business seeks the most economical method of marketing its products . An advertised article is cheaper than one which is sol...

The Berkshire World Did It [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Berkshire World Did It B . J . Barker , Thorntown , Ind ., reports the sale of Doremus Masterpiece 128019 to Mr . Geo . C . Bennett of Memphis , Tenn ., to head his select herd of sows . This sale was made through Mr . Barker s ad in The Berkshire World of December . Mr . Barker writes that The Berkshire World is doing him more good as an advertising medium than any paper he EVER used . It brings inquiries from all sections and as a rule , they are good buyers . A paper as a rule does not sell your stock . You must do that . Too many people expect the paper to do it all . If the paper brings you inquiries , there is something wrong with the breeder or his stock if he does not make a good per cent of sales . The Berkshire World Is satisfactory in Its results .

Can ' t Supply the Demand . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Can t Supply the Demand . Mr . G . W . Sentell , Bunkie , La ., in a recent letter on the Berkshire outlook , says : I have had such a tremendous demand for Berkshires since last Summer that I have never been able to catch up with orders . I am trying to raise the Berkshires I sell , but I am not able to supply the demand . I have about twenty-five brood sows , and you know how good a boar I have in Masterpiece Longfellow . He is certainly one of o Masterpiece s greatest sons , and few , if any , boars living have as good a bone as this fellow . I have two young boars by Master Lee from a daughter of 0 . H . F . Sensation , that I hope to develop for the Louisiana State Fair in 1911 . I lost Master Lee lately , and he was a boar that I thought a great deal of ; a son of Masterpiece out of a daughter- of Handsome Lee , and had proved himself a great breeder ,

"The Berkshire World Necessary to All Lovers of the Berk -shire . " [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Berkshire World Necessary to All Lovers of the Berkshire . Agnewville , Va . The Berkshire World , Springfield , III . Gentlemen : — In consequence of changing my place of residence , I have failed to receive the paper for the months of October , November and December . The Silo Makes Large Milk Checks . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Silo Makes Large Milk Checks . The silo makes it possible for the dairyman to realize his dream of large checks and a full milk pail during the entire year ; for the silo reproduces , better than anything else can , the summer conditions that appear in the winter time . Silage is a succulent ration ; acting advantageously upon the digestive organs of the dairy cow—thus not only providing her with the luscious feed that stimulates the largest milk flow , but at the same time keeping her constitution in such a condition that it responds most readily to the other feed that is given in conjunction with the silage . Silage itself may not be a balanced ration ; in fact , it comes far from it , but if the corn is well matured and in good condition when it is put into the silo it furnishes a splendid basis for any ration . Silage is economically produced for one acre . It will provide more feed for a cow than can be secured from any other possible use to which a like space of ground may...

Rules for Using the Separator [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Rules for Using the Separator Much of the complaint that is made against the hand separator is due to carlessness of manipulation . It takes more care and skill to run a cream skimming machine of this kind than it does to turn a grindstone—although many people seem to treat the two with about an equal quota of thought and consideration . There are just a few rules to be followed that will guide one along the path towards success in the use of a good hand separator , In the first place : follow the directions of the manufacturer implicitly . Remember that the man who Is making the hand separator wants that separator to do the very best possible work , for if it does not he will lose the patronage of this particular buyer , and it will be more difficult to sell other machines in the same neighborhood . For this reason high priced experts are put in the factories to test these machines to the very finest point before they are allowed to go out into the farm homes . Explicit directions ...
