The ooun trj at large waa taken anrpriae—it waa universally supposed that he would sign it without the least hesitation Indeed it was openly affirmed in thester f^oase that lie would sign it—his treat ment of the Boston committee confirm ed this impression and the dreadful persistenej of the originators of th« bill in carrying it through even in the faoe of the protests that were sent in from all seetions of the eountrj, left us to believe that they knew, that, beyond a question he would sign it. If they really behoved so, they were badly de ceived, for the President chopped its head off as promptly as a man would that of a viper. In doing so he dashed himself against many of his best friends, but if he should lose these few by this not, he w...

That Amoriosn girls pursue their studies in the same man- ner as bojs sad that, in a great ma- jority of oases, their health fails before, or soon after, their school-course it end* ed. In refuting the deduotion from these propositions, his opponents have failed to show with sufficient clearness the otter falaitj of tho first of them. American girls do not pursue their studies in the same manner aa boys. They may attend the same sohoels, and go through the same eurrioulum but their habits of dress, of litiog, and of studj are radically different and here is where the wool* trouble lies. Wtu $t. Cloud gaurmit W I E EDITOjR. Thursday, May 28,1874. ACQUITTAL O O IW1NU The very important churoh trial in Chicago, that of Prof. David Swing, pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Churoh of that oity, on charges pre ferred by Dr. Patton, concluded on Wednesday of last week, resulting in theaoqaiital of the aoouaed by a vote of 50 to 14 on one ohargo and 44 to 12 en the other. Thest oharges, in brief, were first, that Prof. Swing had not been lealoos and faithful in maintain ing the troths of the Gospel, and had not been faithful and diligent in the exer oise of the duties of his position and second, that he did not sinoerely re oeire and adopt the Gonfessien of Faith of the Presbyterian Churoh, as con taining the system of doctrines taught in the Holy Soriptures.
