SCHAMP a LETTER. [Special Washington Letter.] IT is really too bad about King Edward VII. He has been ex ploited for, lo, these many years as the ideal monarch and as the high muck-a-muck of diplomats. He has frequently made the tour of Eu rope, hugging and kissing his broth er kings. He has been held up tg our admiring gaze as the peacemaker paramount of the old world. But, alas and alack, there are still within his realm certain surly and bad mannered tolys who do not worship his gracious majesty and who do not believe in his royal capers. Not long since one of these "undesirable persons," as a cer tain pre-eminent functionary would term them, arose in his place in the house of commons and interpellated the ministry as to whether the king has not infracted the constitution by hii political activities! Now, that appears simply awful to us who live in a coun try where the president intrudes into everything, but it is well to remember that in England the king is a mere fgurehead, sup...

Subscription Price $2.oo a year. Publishel three times a week, on Sun day morning, Tuesday and Thurs day afternoons, at 517 Edwards St., by The Caucasian & Carney Print ing Co. Ltd., Proprietors. A COMPROMISE SUGGESTED. Qn its long list of friends are several gentlemen who have said that the com motion over the School Board, the city superintendent and the teachers has been "stirred up" by The Caucasian; and some of these gentlemen, in the interest of harmony, have been urging a com promise of the differences arising and existing, as is said, between some of the teachers and the. superintendent; and some of these gentlemen have sug gested that "politics is at the bottom of it" which, to say the least, is ridiculous. In his individual capacity, The Cau casian's editor has resisted the sugges tion of a compro...

Stories About The Authors Of Indiana. By EDWARD HALE BRUSH. T HE state of In diana has be come so fertile as a literary field as to cause much com ment upon the fact. Other common wealths are almost envious of the Hoosier State on ac count of its growing BOOTH TARKING- literary fame. Not TON. content with pro ducing a Lew Wallace, it .also sent forth into the ranks of literature two very popular humorists, James Whit comb Riley and the younger genius in making folks laugh, George Ade. It is the native state of Joaquin Miller and has produced Booth Tarkington, Charles Major, George Barr McCutch eon, Meredith Nicholson, Wilbur D. Nesbit and others whose literary stars are in the ascendant. Indiana writers are noted for taking home scenes or types of character as subjects. This is especially true of Booth Tarkington, author of "The Gentleman From. Indiana" and of "The Conquest of Canaan," the scenes of which are laid in the Hoosier State. 'Others of his best known works are "Monsieur B...
