The train had just pulled out of Kenwoodl and was making moderate headway toward Forty-third street when a young man passing from one car to another was seen to hesitate for a moment on the platform. He cast a frightened look behind hin. and then his arm shot up and hi hand caught the air cord. He gave it a yank. The signall reached the engineer, who shut ,fl steam. threw over his reversing levtr and apllied the emergency brake. with such force that the train caina to as sudden a stop as though it had struck a stone- wall.
