SUBSCRIPTION PRICE, $2.00 PER YEAR Entered as second-class matter March 3, 1905, at the postoffice at Glendive, Mont., under the Act of Congress of March 3. 1879. THURSDAY. OCT. 12, 1911. DAMAGE CAUSED BY FLOODS. Within the past week the people of the United States have been called upon to aid financially in two sections of the country, victims of floods caused by the breaking of large dams. The one at Austin, Pa., was the more fatal of the two, as it entailed a heavy loss of property and many people were killed. The one at Black Riier Falls,Wis., is one that hits mighty close to home and the result of damage will be keenly felt by many residents in this section, as a large per cent, are from Wisconsin, have relatives liv ing at the stricken city, or own property there. (Contiined from page 1) loss. A rough estimate places the loss at $1,700,000. Not a life was lost as the residents of the city and the low lauide .re.e warned ir time to seek safety on the hills. There was not time enough to save much merchandise or hous. hold goods. The money, papers and books of both banks were hauled:to a place of safety. Many residents lost everything they had in the flood. Dan M. Gross of the Monitor force whose home is at Black River Falls received a telegram this morning from his father which stated that his wagon shop and residence were still safe, although now only a half block from the water edge. An itemized list of the buildings that were swept away, together with amount of the approximate loss was mailed the Monitor. This does not include the lower town losses, only the business district: Larson & Hagan, (tlk Spaulding wagon shop) $5,000. Farmers' Creamery Ass'n, $2,500. Bright & Bailey, flour warehouse, $2,000. This need has been apparent for a long, long time and it seems almost remarkable that so long a time has passed without such an institution in the Gate City. While there are many excellent pri vate libraries and a good assortment of literature at the Dawson County Club, as these are not at the dispos al of the general public, the situa tion is not bettered. Although the older citizens of the city may not feel the need of a library, it is for the benefit of the younger genera tions that these lines are...
