THE TIMES, NEW BL00MFIEL1), PA., OCTOBER 20, 1880. HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN. Dairy Stock. It does not follow that because a cow is of pure breed and fine symmetry It 1b the most profitable to the farmer or dairy man. A mixed breed la generally more satisfactory and advantageous taking In to account the outlay. A correspondent of the Delaware Count) Record says that he bought an old cow of a dealer for $26. 50,tncludlng calf, the latter being immediately sold for $5. 2o. The moth, er was turned into a small field and fed about three quarts of wheat-bran. In a little over the five succeeding months she made 139 pounds of butter, and be fore the expiration of six months she was sold for $73. It would have been difficult to have picked out an animal of an elaborate pedigree that would have proved so profitable in the same time. Despite the very high butter produce of some cows reported from time to time, the average butter produce of the United States Is much below what might be ex pected...

TIIK T1MKS, NEW BLOOM FIELD, PA., NOVEMBER 2, 1880. HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN. , Mature Women For Wives. Youth and beauty are always sure of a hearing; but some writer comes out with a few words of admiration for ma turer charms, In the following Ian . gunge: The man who meets and loves the woman of twenty-live Is truly fortu nate in meeting and loving her. At that age she seldom deceives. She may not have she Is not likely to have then her first sentimental experience, but such an experience at such an age is more than sentimental, and rarely ever fleeting. She looks at the youths she imagined she was enamored with at six teen or eighteen, or often at twenty-one, and they are more than indifferent or repellent to her they are ridiculous; and she, as she then was, is ridiculous to herself. She cannot but be grateful to her destiny that her sympathies and af fections have been reserved for a worthier object and a higher end. At twenty five, if ever, a woman'knows and esti mates herself....

7 V TJJK TIMKS, NEW BLOOMFIELT), rl, NOVEMBER 9, 1880. ... ,. J r HOUSE, FARM AND GARDEN. Country Roads. Mr. Editor: A correspondent of the Gettysburg Star and bcntinel makes the following remarks apout roads that - are applicable to our vicinity: A peasant at one tlmeas asked why he did not repair his cottage roof, repli ed, it did well enough in dry weather, and In rainy weather he could not work at that thing to advantage. The super, visors of country roads, generally act upon this philosophy. Iu the summer roads are paesable and in the winter they cannot be advantageously repaired. Why not do the work when it can, and should be done V The importance of good roads in agricultural districts can not be too highly esteemed. Farms are increased in value when the produce can be easily transported to the market town or the place where the farmer disposes of his produce. A road free from bad bridges, ruts, rocks and Btones, saves time and money for the farmer. His team can draw a larger...
