m owing to its cheapness and the want of other books is the great reading book, and it is here that thousands of youn minds are becoming daily stored w ith its pure and elevating doc trines. Ou this most perfect basis, more than any other, is tire morality of this portion of the nation being founded and built up. For the abundance and cheapness of this sacred volume, the nation has been indebted for years past to the liberality of the Ame rican Bible Society. ? The pressing want of school books was noticed in my last report. I regret to say that this evil, so far from being remedied, has increased during the past year. The number of school books is small at. best, and several of the most important of them, those of aa elementary character, are entirely out of print. Of Atlases there are compara tively few in use, consequently the study of geography is in a great measure suspended. My attempts to have a new edition-of An drews' Atlas engraved in the U. States, have still been unsucce...
