INDIANAPOLIS, IVOT. 28. 1846. Lt. Gov. Dfssixo. The Crawfordsville Tress" of Nov. 20, Las an article in relation to Mr. Dunning which is so very different in spirit from most of the comments which have appeared in the .whig papers on the same subject, that we fed constrained to copy a part of it as the best rebuke which can be given to those who have ungenerously and unjustly assailed Sir. D. We are glad that there is at least one whig japer in the State generous enough to hesitate in the condemnation of a man unheard, instead of taking every charge made against him to be true, merely because he happens to be a political opponent. The 'Tress" says "Since this gentleman's arrival homo "from the war," he has published a circular to the public, in which he denies the many charges brought against him by a portion of the Whig prcs of the State, of being a Sutler, exacting the hard earnings of the volunteers by exorbitant prices for good?, &x. Analysis of flic Hilles. We have read the following analysis of the battles from the Baltimore American, with lively interest. Unskilled in military science, it would b? presumptu ous and foolish in us to allirm that the writer has brought profound knowledge and accurate judgment to his task ; b it wc can say, without exposing our selves to criticism, that he has made the varying characteristics of the respective battles plain to our understanding, and this, wesuppo.se, is a test of quali fication. X 1'. Com. Ad i'. 44 It would seem as though the present campaign against Mexico hid given to our army experience of all the modes of warfare. At Talo Alto the combat was one of artillery mainly, upon an open plain, which afforded every advantage to the cavalry of the enemy. and where the formation of squares, which converts each reiriment into a field fortification, had to be re- sorted to by General Taylor, and where, too, the fly- ing batteries, which in our cities had been looked! upo...
