Watson, of Baltimore, received his death wound at the battle of Monterey, he was requested by his brother officers and men to retire and take shelter from the deadly fire, then playing upon them; his prompt reply was—“No, boys, never : I shall never yield an inch ; I hqve too much Irish blood in me for that.” The next instant he was a corpse! The Cork Examiner has a noble article on the necessity of a “reconciliation,” which we would publish at full length if we could command space for it:— “Where,” asks our contemporary, “is the organization of the past years?— Where the union? Where the vigor? Where the strength? Where the positive force and power of those times? They no longer exist. Why? TEMPERANCE. Rejoicings on the Anniversary of the Very Hey. Mr. Mathew’s Birthday. This city presented a very animated appearance oh Saturday evening, occasioned by the rejoicings commemorative of jhe return of the anniversary of the birth of the Apostle of Temperance. At an early hour in the evening, preparations were observable in all quarters for the coming event, and on the closing in of the night, tar barrels might be seen blazing in various parts of the city, borne on men’s shoulders, accompanied by a numerous procession bearing lighted flambeaux, and preceded by bands of music, which struck up at intervals popular and national airs. Many houses in the city were illuminated, and the Royal Horse Bazaar, Sullivan’s quay, presented a very imposing appearance, the front being brilliantly hung with variegated lamps. UNITED STATES AND MEXICO. From the Gulf Squadron. Attack on Alvarado—failure in the attempt. News nas been received from the American squadron, off Antonio Lizardo, to 25th October. Oct. 13.—Preparations had been making for a month previous, for an ifttack on Alvarado—sailors drilling, &,c. The Mexicans had a battery of ten guns at the mouth of the river. 15 th —Sailed from Antonio Lizardo, and anchored within ten miles of the mouth of the river Alvarado. There was a heavy swell on the bar. lGf/t—Steamer Vixen and steamer-cutter M’Lane, towed by the steamship Mississippi, anchored within long-shot distance and commenced firing. The Commodore, leading in the Vixen, passed the fort, each ship firing her broadside, with little or no effect, owing to distance. Several of our boats sounded within a half a mile of the fort. Arrival of the Great Western! The steamer Great Western, Captain Matthews, arrived at New York on Monday evening from Lverpool,which port she left on the 31st of October, bringing eleven days later intelligence from Europe. Wheat has reached the lowest duty,— 4 shillings per quarter. The cry for opening the ports continues, and grows louder daily. Since the arrival of the Great Western and Hibernia, cotton trade was less buoyant, but still steady. Manufacturing markets dull. The loss of the potato crop affects every business. The produce markets are subjected to its influence. No marked change in cotton, though considerable fluctuation as to the sale and extent of demand. Spinners beginning to work for a short time. An active demand for home grain, especially Wheat, since the sailing of the last steamer, on the 20th. The Royal Mail Steamship Acadia, Capt. Harrison, arrived on Tuesday morning, at a j before 10 o’clock, in the extraordinary passage of days from Liverpool. This is one of the shortest passages for the season ever made, beating the Great Western at NetV York by 3f days. The Acadia brought 56 passengers to Halifax, feft three, and took in eight there, making 61 to Boston. The Acadia is manned by the officers and crew' of the Hibernia, which latter vessel has beefi hauled up for repairs. Parliament would not meet until the 12th of January. My dear Doke—The Royal Agricultural Society, of which you are the head, sent a deputation, not long ago, to the Lord Lieutenat, representing that instead of public works of an unprofitable nature, the baronies should have power to undertake works of a useful and profitable nature. It had been our hope and expectation that landed proprietors would have commenced works of drainage and other improvements on their own account; thus enlploying the people on their own estates, and rendering the land more productive for the future. Mr Dear Mr Duffy —Notwithstanding the decji interest which I have felt in the discussions occasioned by the recent proceedings of the Repeal Association, I have purposely abstained, as long as possible, from mingling in the controversy as a partisan, in the nope that I might thereby be enabled to assist in restoring union amongst the Repealers of Ireland. Since, however, the events of each succeeding day appear to interpose new obstacles to such a re-union, I do not feel myself at liberty any longer to shrink from an explicit declaration of my opinions with respect to the questions at issue. A letter was read from the Liberator inclosing subscriptions of £1 each for himself, and £1 each for his three sons. The late Roman Catholi6 conversions have at least done good to the commonalty, in teaching us a lesson oniumility and reconciliation.
