THE DEAD. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 21 September 1854

THE DEAD. Cos 2ltjgcf«s Sitir. The dead are everywhere! The moun ain side, the plain, the wood profound. All the wide earth—the fertile and the fairIs one vast burial ground I Within the populous streets, In solitary homes, in places high, In pleasure domes, where pomp and luxury meet, Men bow themselves to die. The old man at his door; The unweaned child murmuring its wordless song; The bondmen and the free, the rich, the poor, All—all to death belong! The sunlight gilds the walls Of kingly sepulchres wrought with brass; And the long shadow of the cypress falls Athwart the common grass. The living of gone time, Builded their glorious cities by the sea; And awful in their greatness sat sublime, As if no change could beThere was the eloquent tongue; The poet's heart, the sage's soul was'Viere; And loving wemen with their children young, The faithful and the fair. They were, but they are not! Suns rose and set, and earth put on her bloom; Will st man, submitted to the common lot, Went...

The Turnpike Boy and the Banker. Tt wa« ilnrinfr n nnnl,. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 21 September 1854

The Turnpike Boy and the Banker. Tt wa« ilnrinfr n nnnl,. It was during a pan ; c, some yeais since, that a gentleman, whom we shall call Mr. Thompson, was seated, with something of a melancholy look, in his dreary back room, watching his clerks paying away thousands of pounds hourly. Thompson was a hanker <>I excellent credit; there existed perhaps in the city of London no safer concern than that of Messrs. Thompson & Co., but a moment such as I speak of. no rational reflection was admitted, no former stability was locked to ; a general distrust was felt, and every one rushed to his banker's to withdraw his hoard, fearful that the next instant would be too late forgetting entirely that this step was, of all others, the most likely to ensure the ruin he sought to avoid. 15ut to return. The wealthy sot gloomily, watching the outpouring of his gold, and with a grim smile listening to the clamorous deman Is on his cashier ; for, although ho felt perfec...

Miscellany. Valuable Information. The Washington Star contains the correspond- j -■nee between Thomas S. Drew, Superintendent of I Indian Affairs, and oth rs, relative to a recent discovery, which bids fair to be of great importance. The A/ta Calif or ian says that Dr. G. G. Shumard, Physician and Geolog'st to the Lake Expedition, commanded by Capt. Mircy.U. S. A., to the regions to the source of the Big Wachita and Brazos rivers, in the north of Texas, has discovered a substitute for Gum Arabic, which he calls " Gum Mezquite." a id which, he has no doubt, will prove a valuable source of revenue to the States of Texap, New Mexico, &c. It is believed to exist in inexhaustible luantitiee. Specimens of the gum have been forwarded by Dr Shumard to Dr. Drew, and are <!> scribe'l by the latter as strikingly similar to Gum Arabic, not only as regards taste and appearance, but as to their mucilaginous qualities. Mr. Drew states: " That upon diluting one oun...

A ilkclch of Heal I Ale, [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 4 January 1855

A Sketch of Real Life. BY EMMA. It was mid-winter: the ground was slightly covered with snow, which a chilling north wind had been drifting in feathery flakes all day. The trees were stripped of their green foliage and looked dreary ; the ground was strewn with the sear and yello .v leaf, but the gloomy face of nature did not present a more melancholy scene than the interior of the little cottage which stood nestling beneath those large leafless trees. I was then but ten years of age; but the scone lam trying to picture is as tie h yet in my memory as if it was but yesterday. In a coffin in a corner ofthe room lay the form of my father. My mother gathered her little orphans around it. to look, for the last time, upon that dear face. Oh ! how well do I remember her heart-break-ing sol>s. the scalding tears that traced each other down her pale cheeks as she kissed his sunken cheek, ind smoothed back the damp hair from his cold ] b"6w. and told n«. in broken accents, staled ...

Various Items. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 4 January 1855

Various Items. There is nothing like water for an honest thir st. 2&T Manners make the man, but smartness the money. &S- What men want of reason for their opinions they usually supply and make up in rage. A man in Detroit has been fined $50 and sent to jail for CO days, having whipped his wife the second, night after marriage. gSS* Some descendant of Solomon has wisely remarked that those who go to law for damages are sure to get them. A chaplain in a State Prison was asked by a pious friend how his parishioners were ? " Ail under conviction." Mrs. Swishelm says. " if a man wants his ch In' nto look like him, the fewer jaunts he takes to California the better." She is in faver of woman's rights. Dr. Johnson 1 s Oafs.—Dr. Johnson defines Oats to l>e " a grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people." A saucy fellow, that Dr. Johnson. A country chap, who was caught in the water-wheel of a grist mill, and ha...

The Holidays. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 4 January 1855

The Holidays. Los Angeles Star. THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1855. The Christmas and New Year's festivals are passing away with the usual accompaniments, viz: Bull fights, bell ringing, firing of crackers, fiestas and fandangos. The reunion of the b'hoys at San Pedro was a spirited affair, and passed off with the usual good feeling. The Christmas cotillion party at the Monte, we learn was well attended by the elite of that thriving locality, and the dancing and feasting, and gymnastic exercises continued till morning. In the city cascarones commanded a premium, and many were complimented with them as a finishing touch to their head dress. Upon the whole, we believe it rather an aospicious commencement of the New Year, and sincerely hope it will be a happy one to our friends and patrons.

The Ronriw and Road Commissioners. Tl.;. ;« tl.n ciiacnn wlinn u-nrlr chnnlil lift (InnP Oil [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 4 January 1855

The Roads and Road Commissioners. <> This is the season when work should be done on roads in city and country, for reasons that will be apparent to every one. The gound is in better condition to operate upon—rough places can be levelled and made smooth—hills excavated—ravines bridged, and sloughs drained at a great deal less expense than at any other season of the year. For laboring men this season is far preferable to the hot and sultry days of our long summer, for them to give their quota of labor, which they are lawfully bound to perform during the year. The County Supervisors have year after year appointed Inspectors of Roads in different precincts, whose duty it is to call out all who are required to work by law, and under their own supervision repair roads, construct bridges, and make passable highways as far as labor and means will permit. But what have the Road Inspectors done? Nothing, just nothing. We cannot learn that they have called out the first m...
