ARMY GIVES" UP CONTROL. General Greely Turns Over to Relief Commission Care of 16,000 Refugees In San Francisco. San Francisco.—Major General Greely Monday turned over to the relief commission the care and responsibility of the 16,000 refugees of the San Francisco fire. This marks the complete withdrawal of the army from the city, after an uninterrupted service since early on the day of the earthquake.

Los Angeles.—ln a letter to the Chamber of Commerce from Frank Wiggins, who Is conducting the Chamber of Commerce exhibit at Atlantic City, he speaks of the manner In which the Eastern people received the display of California products. He says the people were so anxious to gain admittance to the exhibit before it was opened that for fear of having the doors and windows broken in—which was threatened—he ordered the place opened. The people do not place any credence in the reports of the earthquake scare here, and they highly commend the assistance the Los Angeies people rendered to stricken San Francisco. MINES YIELD BIGRESULTS RAILROAD BUILDING RUSHED IN NEVADA Searchlight to Be Lighted by Electricity—Rich Discovery In Eagle Group—Claims Bought by Los Angeles Capitalists. Los Angeles.—Follow the railroad if you would reach the land of prosperity. Big corporations have scented the fleshpots of the Nevada mining districts and are racing each other across the desert for the enormous traffic offered them. Several years ago construction was commenced on a line of road from Cailente to Ploche, but for some reason the project was abandoned and it remained for the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake people to see the future of such an enterprise and take up the matter where it had been left off. The work of surveying and grading is now under progress and will be promptly followed by the laying 6f rails. The completion of the road is looked for in the near future. - —WILL REBUILD UNIVERSITY. ‘■i ■ —r~ Buildings Destroyed by Earthquake at Stanford to Be Replaced at Once. ■■■ ' Stanford University.—The work of repair and construction of the Stanford university buildings injured by the earthquake has been placed in the hands of a commission selected from the engineering faculty of the university. The commission Is composed of Professors Marks, Durand and Wing. The reconstruction of the buildings will be pushed as rapidly as possible and the necessary class rooms and laboratories and dormitories will be ready at the opening of the next term, August 23.

Fifteen gamblers left Tonopah tor the Bast, ten from Manhattan and five from Goldfield. All of them are said to be expert roulette and taro men and claim that they have been guaranteed steady employment in the eastern metropolis.
