"Homes Garden Designs br living With some work, anyone decorate like a professional. Just ask David Lee By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer For the past three years, David Lee has been the proprietor of DL Lifestyle on Travis Walk, but he's had an eye for design for much longer — almost his entire life. "I'm not a degreed designer, but you work in this field as long as I have, and you have some definite opinions about design," Lee says. He has the knack — knowing how to put together a room, how to shop for what will work in a given space. "You either have it or you don't—I don't think it's teachable." But for those who don't have the eye for style — which probably includes more gay men than are willing to admit it — Lee is happy to make suggestions for discovering it. Lee's own style is evident from the furnishings in his store, which exude warm earth tones, nat- ural fibers and complex textures. The shop "cer- tainly represents my style — soft, contemporary- transitional, but with s...

But that's depriving yourself of the myriad ways we cast some brightness into our home spaces. Desk lamps, sconces, chandeliers, floor lamps, wall mounts, goosenecks, track lighting, up-lights — the varieties are almost endless. SCONCES For those who like shopping — and decorat- ing — few stores are as diverse and interesting as lighting galleries, which offer countless ideas for how to make your space glow with individual personality. Here are a few suggestions for finding the look that works for you. a Wall sconces are more about color than iiiumination — they can be pieces of art in themselves, that clearly and unobtrusively radiate their style and energy into a room. $349.99 at Lights Fantastic. YOU'LL LAVA IT With streaks of dark colors peppered across a delicate molten-red opaque shade, this hanging light adds fiery individuality, even as it provides a warmth to any home. $329.99 at Lights Fantastic. jk, I 'f | % ■i i HEAVY METAL This intriguing metal table lamp takes a classic shape — a big, round art deco design — and shocks it into the 21st century by replacing the paper, wood and fabric elements with solid steel and chrome. The same principle applies to colors, he says — one color can have many shades, some that work and some that don't. Whenever possible, obtain swatches from retailers and bring them home. "You need to see how it looks in your environ- ment," he says. "And don't be in a hurry — being patient is the advice I most often give." You don't want to make an impulse buy that doesn't work, after all. The next design element to consider is texture: Grasses, bar...

soundout By Tammye Nash questions with Brad Kimple Brad Kimple is a Dallas realtor who lives on the border of Oak Lawn and Highland Park. He volunteers with the group Stop and Think, which works in cooperation with American Ailrines to oppose the repeal of the Wright Amendment limiting flights into and out of Dallas Love Field Airport. How png have you lived in Dallas? Always. I was born in Dallas, and I have been in the real estate business here for about 10 years. Why Jid you get involved with Stop and Think? JamA watching what was happening with the issues around repeal of the Wright Amendment, and I saw the pendulum swinging too far in favor of repeal. I saw too many politicians — peo- ple who had never even been to Dallas and had no clue what was best for Dallas — trying to make decisions for the tax-paying citizens of the city. What to you think is one of the biggest problems with repealing the Wright Amendment? Bur excess noise. It is already intolerable. We have airplanes ro...

dossier Sarsgaard is a man of Mysteries bienna Mi her Peter Sarsgaard, no stranger to starring in films with queer storylines, is returning to the screen in another gay-inclusive feature, an adap- tation of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon's first novel, "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh." The project has been kicking around for almost as long as the 1988 novel has existed. But now the big-screen treat- ment is in the casting stage. Sarsgaard, who played queer in "Kinsey" and "The Dying Gaul," has signed on in a co-starring role, as has British up-and-comer Sienna Miller. The lead role of Art, a young man who has relationships with both a man and a woman, has not been cast yet. Also not cast yet is Pittsburgh where Chabon's "Wonder Boys" (2000) was filmed. The city was the fictional setting of "Queer as Folk," but for that series, Toronto stood in for the former steel town. Production expenses may find "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh" actually being filmed in Louisiana. 'Boy Cul...

Suspect arrested in animal abuse case after tortured pit bull dies From Staff Reports Mercy, the 10-month-old puppy who was doused with gasoline and set on fire, died Sunday evening about 9:30 p.m. at the veterinary clinic where she was being treated. Police arrested Deshawn Brown early Thursday morning and planned to charged him with cruelty to an animal in connection with the incident. Brown was arrested after leaving a relative's home in Corinth by officers acting on a tip. The young pit-bull mix was rescued April 14, by a Dallas man who saw her in the wooded area behind the Rock Creek Apartments at Preston and Belt Line. Be took the dog to the Operation Kindness Animal Shelter in Carrolton, where she was given immediate veterinary care. The dog, named Mercy by shelter workers, was transferred to the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center on April 17 and had surgery the following day to remove most of her burned ears and to begin the debridement treatment. Doctors had cautioned that, ...

The 25-year-old Greater Seattle Business Association, with just more than 1,000 members, is the largest member organization in the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber. But the North Texas organization plans to overtake the Seattle group, Cusimano said. "Before the membership drive started this month, we had about 360 members after just one year. I don't know exactly how many new mem- bers we have had sign up during the drive, but I know the new memberships are coming in," Cusimano said. "Dallas is known for doing things big. We have the biggest Black Tie Dinner in the country, the biggest gay men's chorus with the Turtle Creek Chorale and the biggest gay and lesbian church in the world with the Cathedral of Hope," Cusimano added. "Our goal at the chamber is to join that list of 'biggests,!" he said. Membership in the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce starts at $150 and goes up to $1,000. BUSH Continued from Page 1 really had no life for a very long time. And I needed one." Through the coordination of the annual two- day fall ride, Bush and her team of 175 volunteer crew members and 150 riders have raised about $ 1.2 million for the three beneficiaries of the ride. The ride has benefited AIDS Services of Dallas, the Resource Center of Dallas and AIDS Outreach Center of Tarrant County. Marianne DeLeon, development director of the Resource Center of Dallas, said Bush was a beloved and valued leader. The Lone Star AIDS Ride headquarters is located in the center's offices. "She was the face of the ride," DeLeon said. She really dedicated her life to the ride." Bush's departure coincides with a decision by the 175-mile ride's coordinators this year to restructure how the fundraiser is managed, DeLeon said. The four-member governing com- mittee made up of the executive directors of the three AIDS services agencies and Bush, will be replaced by a 25-member committee that in...

Paul Maccabee Sen. Michele Bachmann Minnesota business coalition asks governor to oppose ban Leaders warn proposed anti-gay-marriage ballot measure could deter talented, creative workers from relocating to the state Associated Press ST. PAUL, Minn. —A group of 50 presidents and chief executives of Minnesota-based adver- tising agencies, public relations firms, graphic design and other multimedia companies sent a letter to Gov. Tim Pawlenty urging him to oppose the proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Paul Maccabee, owner of the Minneapolis- based public relations firm Maccabee Group, wrote the letter. Maccabee said banning gay mar- riage or its legal equivalents in Minnesota's con- stitution would make it more difficult to attract talented, creative workers to Minnesota. "As a package, as what Minnesota stands for, to change the state constitution, to go that extra step to ban same sex marriage, it will have a long-term effect on whether our businesses, our c...
