THIRD DAY. " HAIL ! SMILING MOUS." Taking the cue from a cotemporary who has enlarged upon " the rosy orb of day," and in the uncontrolled ardor of grateful adoration has in " loudest tones'* broken the spell which usually binds the sporting writer to the recitation of " a plain unvar- nished tale," we have been induced to head our narrative with a bit of song. Never- theless "we'must excuse ourselves from dtp ping into those pathetic metaphors which tell of stdky birds ! !-as, acting upon the axiom of a sound English authority, we conceive that a writer " will find it easier to describe an elephant than a pig-a race for the Derby stakes than a donkey race ridden by sweeps on Hamstead Heath. In writing about lowly malters you cannot use elevated language-you must be plain as a pikestaff-the most difficult of all things, and if you are one note too high, or one peg too low, you will be either ridi- culous orvulgar.
