THE FLOODS. More fain ; more floods; more damage; more destruction tmore narrow esuapos ; more disappointment; more delay; more stoppage of business! This is the sad tale it is again our misfortune to tell, and, like most other old stories, it does not improve by repetition. Could the loss tq the shire and town of Benalla by floods this year be reckoned up, it would amount to a pretty penny. Since the last sub-flood (so to speak) a fortnight ago, which only stopped trafrc for a day, the weather had kept up pretty well, and warm sunny weather had begun to draw out the human bees, so long pent up in their hives. Trafio was resumed, and money so long almost unknown had begun again to circulate. Farmers had begun to indulge in the hope that their troubles were over, their sufferings from floods ended, and inmost coesathey had repaired, as well as they could, the misfortunes attendant upon the visitation of the 8th September. Our present issue has been compiled under very great difficulty, and owing to the " quantity of rain falling all through yesterday it is very doubtful when it will reach our subscribers, as another heavy flood seems inevitable. IMPORTANT INQUEST AT THE DEVIL'S   RIVER INN. On Tuesday last, Dr Rowe, the coroner, held an in quest, at the Devil's River Inn,on the body of Laurence Bourke, aged 27, a groom in the employment of the coach company at that place. The inquiry took place at 10 o'clock, and the following were the jury sum   moned from Mansfield:-Mesers B. Martin (foreman), Charles Boles, C. Amoor, W. Fairhead, W. Smith, Hugh M'Intosh, L. Chambers, J. Hearn, J. Beard, W. Thorogood, J. Gunst, James Hull, and J. Jordan. After a the jury had viewed the body, the following evidence was adduced   William Grisdale deposed-I am a farmer and inn   keeper residing at the Devil's' River Inn. EVENTS AT METZ AND SEDAN FROM I?Ta AUGUST TO 10Tn SEPTEMBER. Metz, August 15-The advanced army corps have attacked the retreating Frencb, who made a stand and were reinforced from the fortress. A bloody fight took place on the whole line. The French were thrown back on all points, and the pursuit was con tinued to the glacie of the fortress. After securing the wounded the Prussians returned to their old bivouac at dawn. The French losses were four thousand. Fort Marsail capitulated. August 10-Battle of Thionville. Mar. shal Bazaine was attacked by the Fifth Brandenburg division, which was opposed by four Frenoh corps d'armee. There were considerable losses on both sides. The French lost two thousand prisoners, two eagles, seven cannons there was horrible carnage. The Prussian cavalry charged the guns and batteries, which were twice taken. French writers claim the victory. August 18-Battle of Gravellotte. A fearful carnage took place. There was heroio courage displayed on both sides....
